I have just sold my Yamaha DSP-AX761 to a mate. He was looking for an Amp and I offered him mine as I was thinking of upgrading the the 763.

Now before I go and spend £293 on the 763, is there anything else I should be looking at?

I don't really like the Denons and I like the simplicity of the Yamaha, more than happy with the sound quality paired up with my Jamo A102HC5 speakers.

Main reason for upgrading is cause I wanted black :p and HDMI v1.3 for TrueHD sound and Deep colour etc. The amp will be plugged into my Pioneer 5090.

Thanks in advance

One of the reasons why I went for the Denon over the Yamaha is the number of HDMI inputs. I don't know if that matters to you.

With those Jamo's you won't get much from music anyway and as Marscay says the Yamaha edges ahead slightly with movies, although at that price you'd be very hard pressed to tell the difference.

The Sony is supposed to be great for the money too and I think can be had for £250 now. Maybe that's worth a look for you?

Is that the Sony 820?

I had a look at that but think I still prefer the Yamaha. The only experience of a Denon I have seemed to be a pain in the arse to setup.

I don't need more than 2 HDMI inputs at the moment, I guess I should think about it. Although I could always do HDMI to TV with Optical for sound to the amp for the Xbox if I was ever to get another HDMI device.

Avforums has got me looking into this BTB and WTW issue, apparantly some amps filter the 0-15 and 236-255 RGB colour range out leaving 16-235.

im sure this only applies to the early yamaha hdmi amps such as the 763 and 863

Yeah the early 2008 1.3 HDMI amps have the probelm, they did fix the Z11 with firmware though, I read the thread on AVS and it seems the later ones like the 1900 are ok. Appears it's not much of an issue anyway

yes that is the 820.

As for denon being a pain in the arse to set up, my 2809 was dead easy with the auto setup with the included mic, sounds great to me :D

Yeah, I don't see how that's a valid reason to not buy a particular amp. There's trickier amps to set up than a Denon.

I just didn't like my mates 1907 (I think), seemed much more confusing than my 761.

No it's not a reason just observation, also not keen on the plastic front of the 1909 which is apparently a bit cheap. Does look a decent spec though.

Hmmm

How about a Onkyo 606.

The Yam is out of stock everywhere and the place who I have ordere it from are actually out of stock, despite their site saying it is in stock. They have already taken the money too which is annoying.

I rang the local Richer sounds place for a stock check and he was trying to sell me the Onkyo.

I have found it for £305 vs the £299 for the Yam, so price isn't a issue. Also 4 Hdmi ports could be handy.

Only thing putting me off is the heat they kick out.

Any views?

Thanks
