£2000 hot hatches... credit crunch bargains?

For 2k I would go for a Clio 172 however another option if you like being different is a Punto GT. My friend had one of these with the suspension done and the boost turned up it would leave both a Pug 106 GTI and a Clio 172 behind on both the straights and twistys, it looked good in black aswell.

More rose tinted glasses

I bought a 306 GTI-6 recently for a similar figure, better than the Xsara but commands a price premium and has a slightly worse image.

I prefered the GTI-6 interior over the Clios which I thought was terrible, quite like the GTI-6 dash and the seats are good.

All the Clios I saw for around the 2k mark were coming up to 100k and probably the lower end of the scale of what was available, barried and not as looked after.

I know there are some bargains out there to be had but seemed few and far between.

It didnt help that Clio Sport made the Cars for sale section on the site paid members only viewable otherwise I might have had a 172.

Try the owners clubs for a good one of whatever you choose

Apart from the fact they arn't. Most examples are far older for the monehs, less kit and gearbox is not as solid. They are however better looking no doubt in Phase 3 form.

Ratio wise, the Xsara is a tad bit quicker to 60 too :p

Care to explain? He isnt far wrong to be honest, people slate the Punto GT with no real experience or knowledge other than the fact its got a Fiat badge so must be utter tripe. Back on subject I never realised 172's were getting so cheap now, is 2k nail money or are you able to get a decent example? Would be a great car for the money, only other suggestion would be 306 GTI-6/Xsara VTS.

Toyota Celica GT, Gen 6. Look good, quick enough. 170BHP, 7.5 to 60.

Just my suggestion, I bought mine purely on looks.

I have experience with them. Like the saxo they have build quality issues and an image problem. However they also suffer from chronic understeer, general italianness and unreliable engines.

Side by side id have a GTI-6 but my glasses may be rose tinted ;)

Can have full leather in a Xsara cant you rather than half leather half suade/alcantara. Might slide around a bit mind.

0-60 is for poofs!

Xsara looks pretty good in rally style with some decent wheels I must admit though!

a 172 will hit 140 mate 172 vs Focus RS Standing start.

But its a Focus RS, mmmm, bit more desirable! Friend had a 172 and had so many problems with it, plus the interior was pretty rubbish. It was quick but just didn't do anything for me.

All this talk about 0-60 and fastest through the twisties is pretty b*****ks tbh, long as the cars fun and enjoyable to drive who cares how fast it is! :)

Which is exactly why the 172 is so good.Feel every bit of deviation on the road, only problem is the lift off understeer when you give it to much through a bend.

Also you are not going to find a RS in the 2k bracket

which could be very true as I have never driven one :)

And yes the RS is way out of the bracket!

Been caught out a few times thinking my tyres would cope through a bend only to **** myself at the last minute. Mines lowered 40mm to so handles a bit better than most on the 16's
