TN monitors and watching films

I've read a lot in the past on the forum about poor viewing angles on TN panels and watching films from a distance. Has the technology improved somewhat now or would it be better spending the money on a MVA or IPS monitor?

I'm in the market for buying a new monitor and I'm willing to spend up to £300 if anybody would be so kind to recommend me one. :)

TIA.

what size panel are you looking at?

i have a 24" samsung which is TN based. The viewing angles isnt too bad, i personally dont find the colours too washed out if you position the monitor at eye height.

Of course you can always go for a *VA panel if this kind of thing bothers you.

Fair enough. I got the OcUK value 24" when it was still in stock (VA panel, v. wide viewing angles) and it's great not to have to worry about its positioning (good thing too, as the stand isn't adjustable!). A friend of mine got a 24" TN panel by mistake, which was 'ok', but he used it half at his desk for work and half from his bed for films and it was starting to bug him, having to change its position every time he switched places, before it broke anyway. I'd go VA myself having found my current one awesome and my friend's decidedly less so; trouble is they've all gone up in price in the last 12 months and there don't seem that many cheap non-TN panels around. Course, it doesn't help that half the time you have to guess the type of panel from response times (avoid less than 5-6ms if not wanting TN) and official viewing angles (which often seem to be made up by an optimistic sales rep; my VA had 178°x178° and seems to be the exception - even though you would never look at the screen from those angles, you can tell that there is no colour loss if you ever did).

I've got a samsung 2253bw, and I've got to say that it really depends on the guy who's watching. For example, I always notice the black that just isn't black on the edges when the film is in a different format from 16:9. Yet none of the people that come into my room seem to notice that, I remember pointing it out to once and they all said who cares, it's hardly noticeable. So black won't be really that black on a TN panel, at least for some people.

As for viewing angles, I also get bothered by these. If I'm watching family guy i won't bother to change the monitor's position, but for everything else it's either watch from a chair or spend 2 minutes adjusting the monitor so that I can see reasonably from my bed.

When I wanted to buy my monitor, I was really looking forward to the lenovo l220x, which is one of the few 22inches with full HD, S-pva panel and outstanding overall features. yet the 300 pounds price tag, compared to the 170 spent on the samsung had an important part when it came to deciding on a student budget.

At 300 pounds you can either go for probably the best 22" (the lenovo) or look for a decent 24" with a VA panel, i don't think it's worth spending that much on a TN

They used to sell a VA monitor for around 300, now its gone :(
I think it was called the hyundai w241d
