I replied to an ad' for a driver and received this reply which seems to be along the similar lines to certain scams.

I would normally just bin it but I am desperate to find work at present and ....................... No, actually, I've decided it IS a scam but want to know if I should just bin it and forget it or try to do something about it; any advice?

there are a lot of gramma mistakes, i mean i write nonsense on the forum (grammar wise) but i certainly dont write formal letters like THAT!!!

now on to what i could figure out.

The cheque is a foreign cheque, the clear time is longer (not sure if this includes ireland) what happens is that you will be asked to do two things, 1) clear the cheque after 1 week and 2) clear the cheque after like 6 weeks or when it actually is confirmed.

with option 1, which they normally use (the banks) you can withdraw the money after 1 week, and after about another 4 or so it will bounce and the money will dissappear leaving you with -£4000.

couple of other options but i wont go into

Looks genuine to me, go for it. ;)

On a more serious note, why not just go around all the local supermarkets and ask for a job, or go to the job centre and take anything available?

the thing is there is a way to scam both the scammers, and the banks

the scammers get nothing back, you keep the £4,000 and banks are confused.

I'm trying to work out what happens in this scam... they pay you £4k, and then they take it back... so they make profit how?

They pay £4k with a stolen chequebook ;)

You "bank" £4k, give the scammer £3.5k, then the banks take £4k from you.

if you read my post ive explained it

they pay £4,000 from an empty international account

you pay £3,500 to them (the money clears after 1 week, but takes 6 weeks to properly clear (or thereabouts))

the money then bounces

you get -£4,000 on your balance

they run off with the £3,500

no need to scam any people, they money is just stolen from the banks themselves

I dont know whether its another Irish cheque scam.
2 friends of mine recently advertised in a well known Southern Advertiser mag that they had cars for sale.
Both of them had offers from "different" buyers in Irish Republic offering to pay by cheque, well over the asking price (including "agents" fees) and in Euros.

What's to stop you taking the cheque to a cash-converters-esque establishment and getting £3300 in cash? Do they wait for the cheque to clear?

the money is stolen from the scammee - they end up without the cheque, and without the 3500
