My father's after a new TV but thinks that the 42" PX80 Panasonic Plasma screen is too big. It will be used for SDTV, DVDs, Blu-Ray movies, a bit of Wii and in the future some form of HD sky package.

Cheers guys.

Well the 42PX80 is actually cheaper than the 37.

Put it to him like that and hopefully the brain cogs will realise that the 42 will then fit ;)

My mates parents just got the 37 for £650 with a 5yr warranty. A lot considering the 42 is £500.

A certain large electrical retailer is selling the 37PX80 for £499 today (99p cheaper than the 42") if that's any use - can't decide myself whether to take the plunge and get one, or pay a bit more for a Sony 40" v4000.

Trust me the panny. The gf has the 32 V4000 which is great for the 300 she paid, but it doesn't compare to the panny :D

He's moving house soon so I've convinced him to get the 42". The only issue now is that I've half convinced myself to get the 42" panny myself and flog my 37" LG LC3R =/

Hmm... so the size coupled with no stock for the px80 anywhere means we're still looking. The 37" variant can't be found easily either and it's for the exact same price so any other recommendations?

It seems the whole of GB have gone mad for the 42 version, not unexpected really.

The 37 is the same tv but smaller, but I can't help thinking that it would be a regretable choice to buy the 37 rather than hunting down stock of the 42. My mate bought a 42 on monday from an online retailer for £569, not the stunning less than £500 deal, but still extrememly good value.

TBH, anything under £550 for the 42" is an absolute steal!

Its just a much better TV than anything else out there, even if you go up a bit in price£

got mine on tuesday (the 42)...and i'm still picking up my jaw from the floor! i didnt think i was going to be able to find one anywhere - placed an online order which was 'subject to availability' and got a confirmed order the following morning. ended up having to pay for delivery, but paid £520 all in. in hindsight i wish i had made a bit more effort to get over to birmingham to get it for £550 with a 5 year warranty, but there was no way it would fit in any of our cars! :(

Nice one :D

Only way to fit it is was to take it out of the box and strap it to the rear seat shelf of a normal car. Should fit in a ford focus for example. Then fold the box up and bung it in the boot or around the tv.

More of a risk though especially if long drive rather than your town/ nearest town.

yeah i did consider this, but it's a good half hours drive on a normal day, i would have wanted to be extra careful in this scenario...in the end i dont think it would have been worth the risk. either way, i got me one - so i am happy!

I just picked up a Panasonic TH42PX80B with a black glass stand shop price is £150 and a 5 year Panasonic warranty wait for it.... £650  All brand new got a very nice bargain from a very reputable electrical store, already have a Samsung 50’ HD plasma and the Panasonic is beating it so far in PQ, not much in it. Having 2 Plasmas I’m a bit too greedy :D :D

We should start a PX80 owners thread! Getting my 42" early next week for £539.99 with 5 year warranty.

On another note, what res should i set my PS3 too for Blu-rays and upscaled DVD's? Some people say 1080p, some say 720p cause the TV itself is 720p, so setting it to 1080p means the TV needs to downscale, thus losing detail?

Dunno myself, just wondering what you guys think. :D

I think you should try both and stick with what looks best to you :D

Bit of a hijack here...

I'm after a 37-42in telly to replace my aeging 28" Panasonic CRT. Almost exactly the same use as the OP, cable TV, Wii games, normal DVD's,some DivX and B-Ray in the future. I had a look round a large electronics outlet today and the 37" PX80 was available for £499. Couple of questions..

What are the minimum and maximum viewing distances for the 37" and 42" screens?
I sit about 8-9feet feet from the screen. What would be the ideal screen for this viewing distance?
Is the PX80 a no-brainer at this price? Can anyone PM me with details of the outlet where the 5year warranty is offered too?

Thanks!

The 42" will probably be alright for that viewing distance.

The 42" is pretty hard to find now for a good price. I got mine someplace for £539.99 with the 5 year warranty.

But i think the price may have gone up cause i reserved one last week at that price, called them yesterday to check up on it and they said more where coming in next week, so tomorrow or Tuesday. I asked if the price i reserved it at would be honored and them mmmm and ahhhed about it and then said yes, so my guess is the price is going up.
