I am trying to get my 360 to display 1080p on my 1080p HDTV. When ever I select 1080p in the options, my screen just goes black. All the other resolutions work just fine.

I am using a VGA cable if that makes any difference. I have hear people getting 1080p just fine through VGA.

Any suggestions?

i think you would need to use hdmi to get 1080p? i could be wrong, but using vga you would only get the option to change resolution...ie 1280x768 etc, rather than 720p, 1080p etc.

I guess my sony doesn't support 1080p over VGA. Would a VGA to HDMI adapter work?

My mate has a Sony as well and same thing, the VGA source does not support 1080P (I think he has 40W4000), even though the actual panle is 1080P resolution. I am not sure about the adaptors. Can you not just use a HDMI connection (or do you have a non HDMI 360?).

Just confirming what everyone else said, not all 1080p TVs support 1080p/i over VGA. Very few 360 games display at 1080p though, so you won't be missing out on much by using VGA.

im sure its still the case, but my 40w2000 'didnt support' 1080p over vga either but it could be forced with a custom resolution from a pc. That doesnt help here at all but i will say yes, most sonys dont appear to suppor t1080p over vga out of the box.

why i dont know...

Yea high VGA resolutions are only supported on higher level TFT screens really. For 1080p over DSub it would have to be WUXGA iirc. Which is unlikely on large LCD TVs as its expensive and actually capable of upto 1920x1200, its mainly found on 24" monitors. VGA to HDMI will not work unfortuantly as VGA is analog so youll need a signal converter. You could get a HDFury which will convert digital RGB signal into an analog one (HDMI to VGA) and will support 1080p. Most games are less than <720p anyway tbf so you may as well stick with VGA or get a component cable.

I have a VGA and it will only output at 720p to my 1080p tv.

I had the official 1080p component cable previously but the colours were slighted washed out, the VGA at 720p for me (on 42" 1080p tosh LCD) is a huge improvment.

Ive got a 52W4500 and when you switch to the VGA input you get a blank screen. Wait maybe 10-15 seconds. You then get a picture. It's a weird thing on Sony's where you have to wait but it works fine on my TV.

I use vga on my 360 and I don't get the usual options that I get when using HDMI I just get resolutions to pick from,

At the moment I am using the highest available resolution of 1920x1080

Nothing runs at 1080p on the 360 anyway, so its not really worth worrying about. Only the PS3 uses 1080p on one or two games and its dashboard.

On a 1080p screen the picture will need upscaling anyway, so either you TV or Xbox will have to do it.

No idea which is better though, obviously depends on TV but I just make my Xbox output 1080p on both my LE40A656 and my Kuro 5090.
