How do they compare to the likes of Sony, Samsung and Panasonic? From what i know, Panasonic/Pioneer destroys everything in Plasma, Samsung are a pretty good 'bang for buck', Sony has a very impressive range, LG are okay but as for Philips...?

Note, the above is a HUGE generalisation...and just using my own limited knowledge. :o

We have the previous gen 7603D and I actually find the Ambilight does add something, not sure how to describe it. I really thought it was just a fad but once you have had it on and you turn it off you do miss it. Amibilight aside the set does produce a good picture.

The missus uses the TV quite a lot for her Xbox and the picture is fantastic.

We have a Philips 42" 9632 with ambilight. I was totally sceptical about the ambilight and didn't really expect to use it. Other features of the set were the reason for buying - and seeing it working. But after a few weeks it's quite astonishing how bleak the TV looks without ambilight. We'd really miss it now.
Oh - it's a great picture too. I think I prefer it to the Sony 32" we also have.

I think thats what I was trying to say, a lot of the time we just have it set to a static colour it seems to soften the edges of the screen.

AMbilight is distracting and horrible, hate it. If you want backlighting then get some white LED tubes on the back of your set to give you a nice glow and improve the black level to your eyes.

I wouldn't touch philips as tey just seem to be problematic with what they do, especially the new top of te range £2.5k 42inch screen. If they can't get the best one in the range right then how good will the others really be.

Yeah I forgot how expensive they are. LED tube backlighting is much cheaper and you combine it with a MUCH better tv with that budget.
