how many people went fron 4870x2 to GTX 280 or from GTX 280 to 4870x2?

Just want to know if anybody chose a 4870x2 over a GTX 280 then went back to a 4870x2 or GTX 280 over a 4870x2 then went back to a GTX 280?

I went from a 4870X2 to a GTX280 then back to the 4870X2. The 280 wasn't powerful enough, and unlike a lot of people, I haven't had a single problem with my X2.

Had a GTX280. Was a fantastic card, but when I got the 30" screen I found it struggled at 2560*1600 in some games. The 4870x2 seems to handle 2560 much better. I wouldn't bother upgrading for 1920*1200 though...

Well not really

just looking for a trend if any trend exists of any migrations to and from the 4870x2 > gtx 280 then > 4870x2 or from GTX 280 > 4870x2 then back > gtx 280.

There are others. I'm pretty sure The Asgard went from the 280 to the 4870X2, then back to the 280.

I went from a heavily overclocked GTX 260 Maxcore to a 4870X2 and noticed a very big improvement.

I game at "only" 1920x1080.

I went from GTX280 -> 4870x2 -> GTX280

I game at 1920x1200 and game performance was more consistant with GTX280
The 4870x2 cant seem to deliver frames at a consistant rate when playing ,
so you get some stuttering now and again.
Sometimes this can be overcome by switching crossfire off and only running one gpu.

When I looked at the core utilisation on the 4870x2 when gaming the other
gpu core wasnt doing very much most of the time anyway.

In synthetic benchmarks things are a bit different
3dmark06
17493 (gtx280)
19124 (4870x2)

So the extra gpu gets you 1631 extra 3dmark points more than the single gtx280

I went from a 4870 x2 to a 260gtx. I got rid of the x2 as it was too noisy and didn't get a 280 beacause of the stupidly high price they now are. I will say the 260 can't match the x2 for brute force gaming performance but at 1680x1050 the 260 is still pretty good and in some games like css its even faster than the x2.

so did the last 3 cards I owned, but if you type in fps_max 999 and do a stress test you can still see what card is faster than the other.

I had 2 GTX280s, got to play with stuff for a while before everythnig went balls up. Might be sticking with them for my next build, unless convinced overwise to go with a pair of 4870x2. Oh dear..the new GTX one due out soon too

Posting why & your reasons for change could lead to a battle if not careful And would be better as a Poll so people see the results with out going through the possible battlefield to get to them.

In the space of a month I went from a 4870 512 to a 4870x2 then to a 280gtx (couldn't resist it for £215 from ocuk).

I thought the gtx280 needed rma'ing though so I bought a 4870 1gb as a temp replacement, which I sold on the mm a few days later:/

Well happy with the gtx280 up to now, although I only sold the 4870x2 as it was a little too powerful for the res I mostly play at (mainly game on a 22" crt which I run beside a 24").

Another reason why I sold the x2 is because of the mad cheap price I got it for. I sold the x2 for £340 so it was basically like swapping it for £125 and a gtx280. Not a bad deal really.

I went for a 4870 512mb on launch it was a good solid card, I then got another for some crossfire action it worked well other than a few drivers issues, but the thing that really bugged me was the flickering when watch a video when running duel screens. I lived with it for a bit then I upgraded to three 280's when Nvidia released their multi monitor SLI drivers, the only issue I have had is my middle card overheating and burning out

Exactly the same with me! Had too many problems with the X2 due to drivers. So went back to 280, clocked the **** out of it, and even though i have a 2560x1600 monitor, theres actually very little difference.

I've also owned a 4870, and GTX 260, and as wombraider said i also found that with NV hardware the frame rates are more consistent, theres less variation, which is probably why my gaming experience with my OC'ed 280 is just as good as it was with the X2... but without the problems.
