Hi all
took me 4 days from sheet aluminium to complete

i liked my other but i like this much more

the dimensions of this one are

385mm height
345mm wide
360mm deep

it houses a large psu going sideways, 2 dvd drives, 8 hdd on bottom deck
upper deck can mount the motherboard with high heatsink like the TRUE & there is about 40mm head room above the TRUE and the expansion card length can hold a 4870x2 with 30mm spare with a nice big fat antec 200mm fan on the front and possibility for 1 on the top, and the regular 120mm fan in usual place

the fan on the side blows through the hdd's straight to the power supplys fan and straight out the case

the top panel is secured with rivet nuts and thumb screws so top easily comes off for maintanence and side panels slide on for quick access

spent an entire day designing this on google sketchup, already had some basic ideas for a flatbed style, the end build turned out identicle to the sketchup other than the dvd drives being on the other side, once everything was installed it was a bit fiddly to wire up but once done its great.

possible mods to be done on it
220mm fan or another antec 200mm fan which could be placed on the top, not sure thou yet, it'll need cleaning more often with the extra dust and all
place a ccfl light behind the TRUE hidden next to side panel to give a pretty cool lighting effect, already place a cothode in their, i'll have to add 2 more pics also added mesh on the front 200mm fan, will add the new pics tommororow, thought i may as well post this one now as i've just finnished fixing my pc because of the 8.12 catalyst drivers messing my pc up, all fixed now thank goodness

almost did a proper worklog but did not, instead you get to see the finnished working state
enjoy the pics, they don't really do it justice i would need a better camera and tripod to get perfect pics, but i'd rather save for a x58 & a i7 920 and 6gb tripple channel ram, oh well.

protofront.jpg

front view - this is the sketchup design i made

protoside.jpg

side view - the dvd drives had to be on the left side to give clearance to the front power and reset delrin vandal resistant buttons

Tools

02.jpg

Right side empty view with 2 dvd-roms perfect fit

04.jpg

1 of the hdd cages which hold 4 in between the sheet of metal and the cage i placed a strip of accoustic foam it prevents vibrations from going through the case.

05.jpg

another side view but without 1 of the cages, i just riveted a strip of aluminium to the bottom panel and the cage slides underneath it to hold in place, it works pretty good.

06.jpg

another side view but with the fan holder to blow over the hdd's with 2 dvd-roms perfect fit

07.jpg

rear view

08.jpg

front view 200mm antec 3 speed fan spray painted cream white with a speckled haze of silver, would have used other colours but i had none and it looks pretty good, still want to give it a speckeled haze of a dark colour.

09.jpg

could not find a fan grill for the antec 200mm so rather than just cut a hole and put mesh behind it i simply made a random pattern with the dremel, i could have possibly used the grill from my old antec 900 but decided against it, took ages to smooth it out using the jewelers files but was definately worth it althou i went a little too far on 1 of the cuts with the dremel and when filing i accidentaly slipped and made a couple of scratches oh well.

10.jpg

both side panels slide down and can also rest on the middle tray

11.jpg

nice and flush fit

12.jpg

same again

13.jpg

with the whole left panel being modders mesh it alows for plenty of air release and looks pretty cool me thinks.

14.jpg

the side panel can slide up to 2nd level so they are easily accessed, woohooo and with the case being so compact and packing the features it has there was nowhere else to place the dvd drives so i ended up having to go sideways and placed at the back behind the side panel, they fit perfect, but when i have enough money for some 1.5tb drives i would be able to lose one of the hdd cages and use the 1 and have the dvd-roms at the front as they should be.

15.jpg

set up and ready to roll

16.jpg

just need a better motherboard that has the sata sockets on the side of the motherboard rather than on the face, makes for a wiring nightmare if you using 8 hdd

17.jpg

pretty minimal night lights at the moment.

18.jpg

with the camera flash on

19.jpg

another pic without the flash

21.jpg

ooh and another with hdd activity lol

23.jpg

you can just about see the speckeled silver on the cream painted fan in this pic

24.jpg

topless flash
i'm also going to try a ccfl light right next to the plain side panel, if it turns out good i'll post another pic

25.jpg

just topless

and the great temps this case produces, it beats my last diy case on looks, functionality and tons smaller than my 1st attempt

Thanks gt :) nice pc by the way

Here with mesh and blue cathode installed

Overall it looks really cool, but I think the mesh looks a bit tacky. When/if you install the Optical drives at the front, i'd suggest a proper side panel maybe with a window. It'll look far better I reckon.

Other than that, great stuff. The front logo is sweet, the compartmental design is awesome. Now you just gotta throw a 200mm (Or two :D) in the top!

Happy new year, a day late i know but hey:)
i shoved an Akasa 22CM fan on the top as ehaust and dremelled a grill into the top panel, looks pretty good and there are no warm spots anywhere now.

i was getting fed up with having to keep on lifting the side panel every time i wanted dvd access, it was only a temporary measure anyway, so here is what i designed, i was not sure if i could pull it off but i have the front part made now, i'll update with photos once i finnish with the body filler and paint job, almost 100% done now.

Thanks for the feedback :)

Would be nice if it was tidied up and had no scratches. Where did you get the mesh and the aluminium, i'd love to try something like this.

What sorta noise is it making, is it quiet?

I can't wait to see this done with front mounted DVDs and a nice side panel. I WISH I could do something like this.

Top marks.

here is the freshly fabricated piece, just need levelling so it is flush to the case, and then make a mounting bit then use body filler, then sand, then prime, then paint, then clear coat, then mount woohoo :)

here is the top blow hole i made with 220mm akasa fan, the grill could do with a little bit more filing, still a little rough here and there

i would normally buy the alluminium from here and i recomend them highly 10/10 easily, excellent packaging and speedy delivery at a very low cost.
http://www.thealuminiumshop.co.uk/acatalog/index.html

but this time i bought ac-ryan annodised black 500x500mm panels, cost close to tripple compared to plain aluminium, i should have stuck with plain and just done a nice paint job on it, would have looked much cleaner with no scratches also. the only other expensive bits were the delrin vandal resistent power & reset switches coming at £12 each and you have to wire them yourself, but i think they are worth the money they beat any power switches i've ever seen, very high quality.

the tools are the most expensive part and still absolutely nowhere near the calibur of the machines case manufaturers use.

it is very quiet actually the most noisy thing in the case is the enermax galaxy psu, been tempted to change the fans on it or even mod it but i think i'll probably leave it alone just to be safe.

not my sort of case but like the fact you have given it a go and if it fits the bill for what you use it for then its a good build

Seems to be a lot of panel bending due to the weight of the mobo etc. Seems the sheet thickness you used is not stiff enough to by itself. Could you retrofit a few alu angles to make an internal frame to square everything up?

yeah there is quite a dip in the mid panel, just needs a small but stirdy angle bar or even just a flat bar on both sides for mid & top and it will be nice & rigid even with both side panels and the top off, something else to correct but after i complete the front panel:D

Grats on the fact you decided to design and build your own case and came up with a finished product .

But it looks dare i say "gash" rough finishes sagging alloy etc

I applaude you for doing what most people cant but that case is the main reason people dont make there own .
