Surge protectors...which do you use?

you really have to try hard to overload a socket unless your plugging heaters in. the only things i have on their own dedicated sockets are my tv and av amp, purely because they can pull up to 400w and 800w respectively on their own. its for piece of mind more than anything though, tbh.

Typcial MOV surge protectors only protect you against a few surges, after that they're pretty much normal outlets. Don't know if its worth spending a lot on one, maybe you should consider power filtering instead.

dansdata on power filters.

A few years ago a storm blew my ADSL modem. Other mains stuff was in a basic surge protector.
Then I bought a Belkin with phone sockets on the assurance it would protect the modem even with power to the Belkin turned off. I've kept the email just in case.

not everybody would want to run an inefficient, heavy, noisy transformer based filter.its yearly power consumption alone would enable you to buy multiple cheap mov based protector if you want to change it every few months.

Household insurance :), they are pointless IMO

How many cases of surges have you heard of? me none!

For a business then fair enough as a 'precaution' of something that will never happen.

modern ones are fairly good actually, APC makes a 1200VA rated one for around 40 quid. They are very efficient and dead quiet :)

My house has really dodgy power, I've had 2 power supplies and a hifi fry. Installed a conditioner and haven't had a problem since.

Theres a chance nothing will happen ever, but theres also an equal chance something might actually go wrong so why take the risk. thats my opinion :P
