Distance remaining - 0 miles

an interesting thread, but I can imagine it's better not to do this all the time!

Lowest I've ever got in my current car is about 15 miles. No idea how much fuel is actually left - just don't fancy having to do the walk of shame!

I've done well over 60 miles after the trip computer read "---", and I still didn't run out. The tank did then take 56.82 litres (its supposedly a 55l tank)

The volvo is an odd one (no trip comp). Had the fuel light on for 15-20 miles, and went to fill up (70 litre tank), managed to get 52 litres in (with a few short bursts after the initial click off). So I had nearly 20 litres left in the tank on "empty".

i have run mine on 0 miles for 2-3 miles whilst i franticly tried to find a petrol station, I am sure most cars won't get more than 10-20 miles afterwards. I didn't believe the top gear test one bit tbh!

Yep when mine goes to --- i've got another 40 miles out of the car without issues, why people think empty on the dial actually means omg the tank is totally empty i'm not sure.

I need to do this in the Manta at some point, as there is no trip computer and the fuel gauge is incredibly inaccurate (I can get from full to half a tank in 20 miles, then it doesn't move for another 150 miles etc). It has a cam driven mechanical fuel pump so no worries there, no injectors to block either.

With that said I've run out of fuel in all sorts of cars and never had any ill-effects. Other than being stuck at the side of the road :D

My cars fuel gauge is a needle that just goes to E :( you have to gues how much beyond that you have, ive done 60miles on E before. its not the most accurate thing.

A lot of cars (definitely both my old Jaguars) specify a reserve. The reserve is not taken into account for trip computer or fuel gauge readings.

My Xj's were something like an 81 litre tank with a 5 litre reserve. When the fuel gauge reads empty and the miles read 0, the reserve means you have another gallon and can do at least another 20 miles.

No idea if its 2 seperate tanks though - unlikely.

Jaguar list on their website for the new XJ that it has an 85 litre tank with a 5.8 litre reserve. This is why Clarkson could do so many miles even after the trip computer said "0" in that recent episode.

I've got to 5 miles left, but have never let it get to zero.

I'm not sure if it actually harms the car when you run out, and it's not my car to take that kind of risk with.

It was just lies you mean.

He drove from Birmingham to Blackpool with it on empty, then declares he had 120 miles of fuel left at 40mpg thats still 3 more gallons left in the tank!

I mean it cools and to some extent, lubricates the pump internally.
I always thought that, unlike diesel, the lubricating properties of petrol were pretty much nothing beyond small quantities of additives.

Also, if it's for internal cooling, then it should have been normally cooled right until the last seconds!
Another useful post from PMKeates (no, really!).

I've got down to ---- before, but only just before reaching a petrol station. I guess that means I didn't need to panic :D
Hehe - let me know if there's anything else you want testing, like:

How long will the engine stay at max RPM?
How high can the HVAC system raise the interior temperature?
What's the 0-40 time... in reverse?

My clio fuel guage always confuses me. When the light comes on I usually fill it up, however its a 50l tank and I can never get more than 44 into it, even after driving about on the yellow light for a while!

my light in my fiesta comes on with 50miles left which is just under 1/4 of a tank ie 11 litres.

11litres is a lot of miles.
