Ultrac Sessanta's (Quick Review)

heard good things about these. would be interesting to see how they compare to the F1 asym's as well as the GSD3's. :)

I made an error. :(

further reading reminds me these tyres are not directional as olv correctly pointed out. They are in fact asymmetrical, hence there only being a single tyre rather than pair.

Damn you all now I've got another tyre to consider! Though I think these are slightly more than the GSD3's in my size.

Firestar_3x do you find your turn-in has improved from these having stiffer side-walls over the older GS-D3's?

I get much better steering feedback now, initial bite and turn-in seems sharper, strange thing is the ride is the same as on the F1's i'd expect it to be harsher.

Its going to be very interesting once i've got some more miles on them, they should get even better :)

For my car they represent awsome value as in 20" size they are half the price of all other tyres at £150 each. :)

Same here, the veccy takes 235/35/19 which for the Sessantas are £122 delivered.

Eagle F1s are more like £150 and the standard fit continental sportcontact2s are over £200. Whats even more bargaintastic about them, is not only are they about £70 cheaper than my existing tyres , but they've been scientificly proven to be better in the evo tyre test too !

For smaller size wheels I can highly recommend the standard Ultracs
Had them on my car for around 6 months now, and in that time I've been over to the Nurburgring, and the wear rate is excellent. Wet and dry grip is also excellent and the steering seems a lot more direct than before. Cost me £320 fully fitted for a full set of 205/50/16's from my local garage that price matched the cheapest I found online :)

Can you really give a good review of a tyre after 40 miles? Surely this is still the run-in period?

Yes because i know what the F1's are like during the first 40 miles, so this is a fair comparison and after the run in period the tyres are only going to get better not worse.

I've now done over 800 miles on them and my initial views are still correct, however i must admit the weather isn't very good for tyre testing, nothing but slippy surfaces atm.

Are these the same as the Ultrac Sessanta XL?

I've been searching high and low for my next set of tyres and the Vreds seem to be cropping up on every search.

I can get all 4 for £475 fully fitted (or £432 just delivered) from http://www.tyretraders.com - how much did you pay and where if cheaper?

Also does it matter is one is a different speed rating to the other pair? I cannot find all 4 on the same speed rating, only:
VREDESTEIN 245/40ZR17 95Y Ultrac Ses...
VREDESTEIN 225/45ZR17 94Y Ultrac Ses...

I've been using Pilot Sport 1 tyres for the past 10k miles (they already came with the car with around 5~mm tread on each corner) and find them to be very good for grip in wet and dry.
They do have a harsher ride than I'd have hoped for but the corner handling (commute through most of the windy roads in and around the Southampton & Fareham area) and braking I found to be faultless.

They do tramline at lower speeds though!

I wouldn't mind them again (the PS2 though) but they're too expensive for what appears to be equal performance to other cheaper tyres and I'd rather have something a little more less harsh whilst still having the same grip and handling!

You can get them delivered for £368 from camskill.co.uk
225/40/17 £ 80 x2
245/40/17 £104 x2 andfree delivery and they are the same rating as what you have posted.

Are these the same as the Ultrac Sessanta XL?

XL means Extral Load iirc so odds are they have stiffer sidewalls, might lead to slightly better turn-in but i'm not sure, i was under the impression you could only get the larger sizes in XL but i've only looked at 18" rubber.

XL just refers to the load rating, so they will be the same tyre. Check the load rating of your existing tyres - it's the 94/95 bit before the speed rating.

I've had 225/40/18's on my car for 4k now and I'm very pleased with them. I always used Michelin PS2's but even from Costco they were £130 a corner, I got the Vredestein for £91 a corner including fitting and balancing from www.northwesttyres.com. I do think they lose a small amount of feel compared to the PS2's when on the front, but they don't half dig in when you're gunning it around a roundabout.

The only other thing with them is they make a really horrible noise on concrete roads at speed. Concrete is noisy anyway, but these tyres seem to bring out the worst in it. It doesn't really bother me as I don't drive on concrete very often, but if I was communting down the A50 or along sections of the M1 in Yorkshire I'd probably go for something else.

Cool cheers, my existing tyres are all 91Y rating if that helps, they do have reinforced sidewalls too.

Edit*

I've been thinking I had Pilot Sport 1 tyres all along but in fact they are all PS2 ! only just noticed the small engraving saying "PS2" under the Pilot Sport logo!

Tyres don't make much difference - the ride will be harsh on relatively low profile tyres + M Sport suspension (as your car is).
