My monitor is very old and it 20 inch but can do res like 1600x1200 i will be getting a new cheap one of my mate in feb for nothing as i cannot afford a lcd yet.

I was deciding on a 4870 next month providing the prices go down.

But from a lot of posts i have read the 4850 is a very good gaming card.

I previously had a msi geforce 8800gt 512mb but it has gone back due to being faulty.
fear on max settings on 1024x768 the game would stutter midly in some intense areas is the ati radeon 4850 much better than the 8800gt?

And is it worth getting i liked to play games maxed out like oblivion, fear, doom 3, and i will be getting bioshock soon which i want to play maxed out.

Hi there, I recently moved from a 8800gt 512mb which broke to this HIS ICEQ4 turbo 4850 512mb. I'd say that the 4850 512mb is definitely the faster card, however I am surprised that a 8800gt would be slow on a game like fear at that low resolution. What are the rest of your systems specs? Maybe some other components are the bottleneck and not the graphics card.

I think my processor may be the issue but i have bought an artic cooler 7 pro for it which was faulty and the good ocuk are replacing it free for me.

My cpu is pentium dual core e2200 2.2 ghz i could not get a good overclock with the default cooler i am hoping to get the chip up to 3.4 oc ive read that my chip overclocks very well.

I have 4 gig of ddr 2 800 mzh geil ram funny thing is 1 stick does not work by it self, it will work when its with the other set of 2 gig to make up 4 gig very strange i have been told to run memtest on that so i will.

600 watt cooler master power supply.

a 4850 is probably about 15% faster than an 8800gt on average. It's hard to give an accurate figure as all games are different. It's faster but not loads (I've owned both). There is noway an 8800gt would struggle with FEAR at that resolution. Run the in-game benchmark on max settings and post the score here. As for the CPU, When I had an athlon 64 3000+ single core, I overclocked it from 1.8ghz - 2.15ghz, then had an athlon 64 4000 at 2.4ghz -> 3.0ghz then had a dual core 64 2.0ghz -> 2.6ghz. FEAR was about the only game (at the time) that didnt benefit from the extra CPU power or maybe 1fps here and there.

I cannot test as i am waiting for replacement board and new coolerplus my 8800gt was faulty maybe that was the issue with it midly stuttering in places oblivion was bad for it but that game is meant to micro stutter anyways.

BTW it was midly suttering on 1024x768 res. not greatly gpu must be the issue it artifacted badly and locked up with corrupted graphics i have sent it back to dabs and im getting money back which is why i am not sure if to get 4870 or 4850.

Are you getting a replacement 8800gt then? Or just getting refunded money? If you are going to get a replacement I wouldn't bother upgrading the gfx card but spend some money on a better cpu.

I am getting money back, i cannot afford an upgrade plus i have been told if i overlock my cpu to 3 gig mark it be a lot better.

I am without a graphics card so the money is going towards a new one.

If i wad to upgrade my cpu it would be the cheapest quad core the q8200 but will wait for it to come down in price would that be a good upgrade my the cpu i have now?

FEAR had problems with nVidia GPUs i seem to remember. My 8800Gts 512 played fine for awhile then the FPS used to drop ti 16 or so until I restarted the game and it was fine again. May be same case twith your 8800GT :)

you'd prob be better off with a new C2D, the E8400, you can clock that upto 4Ghz, and about £5 less than that quad, if you do want quad go for the q6600 not much more and dbl the cache
I'd splash the extra for the 4870 over the 4850 personally, although with your current monitor it wont really matter, but if you get a decent one in future it will

Well seeing as you are without a gfx card get a 4850, they are good value for money.

A q8200 would be a decent upgrade, but when it comes to actually buying one in the future it would be a good idea to check the q6600 prices particularly the SLACR G0 stepping one, very good overclockers. The price difference isn't normally much, and now they are the same price because of the this week only deal.

Wouldnt a quad core bennefit more? i like to game, i have mentioned a few above and would like to be able to play new games like fear 2 and stuff.

Is the 8400 a good cpu top get that will last a few years?

PS have they got a 45mm version of the q6600? i have heard the q6600 are amazing processors.

Thats the eternally asked question to which you'll get lots of different people arguing over, but the E8400 is an excellent processor yes
It will clock higher on its 2 cores, as I said you shoud get 4Ghz out of it, the Q6600 will prob clock to 3.4-3.6
Theres not many games nowadays that use more than 2 cores, but ppl speculate in future there will be thats why they say go quad, me I say who knows what going to happen in future, get whats best for now, which is dual

Don't get a q8200 unless you are going to buy a really good motherboard and RAM to be able to get a good overclock from it which defeats the point from a price point of view. You have a good CPU there, overclock it. Only upgrade to an e8400/8500 or a q6600 or Q9450 or above.

@ Dmxdex2020

You should be well set for gaming with your new gpu and a 3.0Ghz cpu.

If you intend to do any video editing/conversion or use compression software regular or even multitask a lot as well as playing games, consider getting a quad core :D I heart my Quady!

Well the only thing im going to be doing is internet and gaming that is all i do, i will have a couple of things in the background like an anti virus program i heard avast is best one to get windows blinds for xp and mayeb zone alarm but i can get a program which turns these off when gaming.

So i should be fine with what i have?

lol yes i was looking them shame they are out of my range at the mo in about a month they might not be but they probs be all gone by then maybe i can nab one in the b grade in a month or from somewere else amazing price drop.
