So its january again and everybody wants to start going to the gym again

Why do all you people (Not directed at anybody directly) have such good intentions and make a new years resolution to go to the gym and just take up all the equipment for like a month and dont stick it out....

Why do you all do this?

Just dont go if your not gonna stick it out!

If you want to get a little bit fitter without taking up all the equipment and wasting money on a gym subscription just eat well and walk everywhere.

:) Ahhh Rant over.

If it wasn't for all those people who pay for a gym membership and then barely go after the initial period your membership would likely cost a lot more than it does, so be thankful for them.

Why not? Some people will actually stick to it. Some wont, they'll feel bad and try and get healthier in other ways. Some will get bored of it as its "not their thing".

Does it matter?

Gym is also inside. Jogging is an outside activity, its cold, and you'll catch a cold.

You're more likely to catch a cold in the gym than you are outside.

If it wasn't for these people buying a years sub to use it for a month your yearly gym costs would triple... suck it up my friend

I'm starting back at the gym tomorrow after a shocking 6 week break. I came down with a nasty cold which left me with no energy. Only managed to shake it the week before Christmas so I decided to have a good break then hit the gym hard. Looking forward to getting back in the swing of things.

I agree with him though, tonight is going to be heaving at the gym and its a bit annoying for regulars to have to deal with the new influx of people. The majority of them won't stick at it for more than a month. I can understand joining a gym to do weights or to take part in lots of classes and activities there but why join a gym to get fit when jogging or playing a sport is more fun and is free, or at least cheaper?

For the record, you're unlikely to catch a cold just by going out in the cold. It is merely the combination of going out in the cold then being exposed to a virus or vica verca. You'll pick up the virus indoors in an artificially heated environment, it can't survive in the cold weather well, just the cold lowers your resistance.

I don't know why people who regular gyms feel like they have more of an input or are more valuable to the gyms, but it makes me laugh!

The valuable people in gyms are the ones who buy membership and never turn up, they're not taking up space! And if it weren't for them your precious gym would most probably be out of business.

Regardless of how 'valuable' they may be, New Years Resolutioners make the gym much less enjoyable for regulars, and that's annoying. That's the gripe.

Do you walk to the shops in a protective bubble or something? Its impossible not to get covered in viruses when outside.

I think it's quite funny watching people join only to see them leave by the end of the month. That said, I don't have a problem with it because at least the intention was their in the first place. Unfortunately, the motivation to start and make a habit to keep going has to be more than a New Years resolution.

I think his point was that the cold isn't what gives you a virus, its simply what lowers your resistance. Being inside in the gym is a much more likely location to actually become ill, its just that being outside in the cold might have weakened your immune system. There are ways to avoid the cold lowering the immune system too much, like wrapping up to keep warm.
