Do all Cherry keyboards use mechanical switches?

Can anyone recommend me a keyboard with a proper chunky feel to them? I used to use a BBC Micro back in the day and loved the feel of the keyboard, but have never managed to find a PC equivalent.

If that is why you buy your keyboards, fair enough

They feel nicer to use

How do they feel "nicer"? when you press the keys are they smoother? Less stiff feeling or something?

I just like the lighting up keys keyboard, makes it easier to see, also I like the LCD screen on it for telling the time and all that other stuff etc.. very useful keyboard this G15.

Use a watch or clock on the wall/desk, type thetime in steam games. Why do you need an LCD on the keyboard to tell you :p

I do agree they are basic, but all buttons can be programmed in the games I play anyway so there isn't a problem there. Having the backlitgh through the keys was messed for a bit, but I'm used to the flat profile now and don't really need to lok at a keyboard much anymore to know what i am typing. But the best thing is the build and price, everything seems really shoddy vs. the cherry, and at £13 you can't complain at compared to these £60 things.

O and for reference the cherry I have is much nicer than the one OcUK stock, that looks a bit cheapy to be honest.

A good mechanical switch keyboard will be engineered to have good feel on the keys usually entailing one or more light spring resistances and a positive give or click when the key registers, the range of key movement is also optimised to suit fast, accurate and low strain typing (empahsising type, not play games/browse) by 10 fingered touch typists.

Membrane keyboard designers spend ages trying to replicate with collapsing domes and differnt membranes similar kinds of movement and feel which is duly reflected in the marketing guff except of course for gaming keyboards which tend to use short throw keys, avoid noise and are more concerned with allowing you to run digaonally using WASD keys crouching and jumping at the same time whilst firing the BFG.

some Cherry boards have mechanical switches and some don't.

these guys make & sell the IBM battleship-boards without the IBM branding (and they use PS/2 plugs instead of DIN plugs!)

This is exactly what I've been looking for. I hope they deliver to the UK. The 104/105 has Windows keys and seems to have 6 extra buttons top right.

the old IBM/unicomp keyboards are very heavy, they're built ontop of a steel plate.

shipping will be expensive.

<edit> Oh! those blue things aren't buttons, it's the unicomp logo!

It says they deliver internationally and I am just trying to find out what the N-Key rollover specification of them are. Personal use would be for tracking, not gaming, where keyboard can be used for note entry and other commands so quite random combinations can be used.

Their initial reply.

Our keyboards do support modified N-Key rollover as specified by IBM and Microsoft. While they will support some 5/6 key rollovers, they will not support those outside the specifications.

I'm off home now but will hopefully pick it up tomorrow.

I think I still have some the older ibm keyboards boxed as new in my attic, wonder if they are worth selling haha.

Gonna have to jump in and say how much I loved them too, I'm sure one of my first microsoft ergonomic keyboard used mechanical keys too and I used that to the death (by death I mean when it was far to dirty :P)

If they're Model M they are worth a little. Search Ebay for IBM Model M and you will generally see them going for between £20-40 depending on whether they've been reconditioned etc. Nearly all on Ebay are in America so you might be able to hit the UK/European market as shipping costs would be better.

The IBM Model M is the ones I have actually I had about 20 in total at one point I think from changing over a large amount of machines at a friends work. Think I binned most just kept the new boxed ones :(

ever since i moved over to apple slim keyboard i cannot for the life of me go back to big lego brick clunky keys, its feels prehistoric. Touch-typing and speed has greatly improved also. Not the best for gaming but that dont stop me being first place ;)

must say that steelseries keyboard looks nice or im thinking the razer lycosa mirror (just for gaming)

:)

Again using the Cherry keyboard/switches. Well at least the 6G goes and I think the 7G as well.

SteelSeries 6G is a professional gaming keyboard - designed exclusively for hardcore gamers. SteelSeries 6G utilizes high quality Cherry gold plated connectors to deliver a very durable and extremely responsive gaming keyboard.

Well, I've just ordered a Customizer 104/105/. $69. Shipping $0.00. Tax $0.00. Total $69.00. Free shipping seems strange for such a heavy object, hope it isn't a mistake.

Would you mind posting your opinion of the beast here in this thread when it arrives?
