Advice On New Camera

First 3 are over exposed . 4th is ok but badly framed . 5th slighty underexposed and to much DOF for me . 6 exposure seems ok but again to much DOF and it just looks weird and 7 ..looks ok as a thumbnail but out of focus (handheld?) and the rock and branch spoil it .

yes. They are by no means my best shots, and 2+3 weren't even taken by me. The water was hand held. Perhaps -J- may find them useful or not.... For me too see the level of detail in the face shots particularly is quite impressive.

It took me about 50 shots to get a idea on the focusing system. Still ain't got it worked out 100% yet. :)

Want to get the D40 but the cheapest places are sold out now. Might stretch the budget for a 1000D instead now.

Yes I noticed the price is rising again cheapest now seems to be 240+.... If it had been more expensive at the time I bought mine, I may have considered other cameras more closely, but I feel that truly was bargaintastic. And I beleive it was as low as £208 in early Nov...

So as a starter camera for someone starting to get into more advanced photography is the D40 a good one would you say whitecrook.

Good pictures by the way, looks like your getting hang of the camera quite quick.

£250ish with cashback the 1000D is, better than the D40. Sits between 400D and 450D in terms of spec/functionality.

bargain :)

I would say so. I think the fact it's still regarded as a great camera 2 years later is testament to how good it is. Just got a 55-200 lens getting sent to me as well. The kit lens isn't quite long enough for me. But wide enough at ~28mm equiv.

It's doesn't have built in VR, no dust shake, no fancy gadgets, just a quality camera with great handling - which is what I was needing.

By all means check out the alternatives. I really think at the end of the day these cameras are all 'pretty cheap' and will all take great pictures! It doesn't really matter what one you get. I just went for the cheapest.

One thing I noticed that I wonder if high end model have is a decent focussing screen - the D40 does indicate being in focus with a green dot in the corner when manual focussing, but I wonder if better DLSR or can the D40 be modified to have a old-skool 'sort of crystal' in the middle that makes it all too easy to dial in the focus at speed manually?

I've found the D60 online for around £290 before cashback, but don't really fancy buying from the website in question :(. And the 1000D for around £320 before cashback in a store on New Oxford Street.
Still kinda stuck between the two though. Will be my first DSLR, and to be honest, not sure which is better, been trying to read as many reviews as I can, and get to know as much of the terminology as I can lol.
