im thinking of taking the plunge into the bank for the GTX280, is it worth it? i game at 1680x1050 and currently have an 8800gt which im giving to my dad, should i get a gtx280 at the current price?

Yeah I would . I have the gtx260-216 and I play @ 1680 so the 280 would be better still.

Far Cry 2 at max everything at that res pushes the card to 40s fps which is nicely playable.

Crysis and GTA iv would benefit from it.

GTA is controverial and crysis some people call crapsis but imo it's a great game and nothing touches it visually yet and with a gtx280 crysis will play well at that res - I play in the 1600s with crysis max and it's smooth.

Now GTA does well on the card. Ok I play at 1280 on GTA but it plays well with high settings however I'm limited with the 890odd ram but with the 280 you'll have more ram and you have more shaders - I up it to 1600s and I don't have enough video ram with good settings.

Etc..basically in a nutshell if you can play those games well any other game out at the mo will play at 1680 at top settings.

At the price it is - it's a steal.

I hope I've made sense ; a bit tired lol.

Part of me is thinking of selling my 260 for the 280 and hopefully sell it for full price on fleabay.

I also play at that rez and for me I personally do not see myself ever wanting a bigger screen. I have an 8800gtx and was all set to keep it through to the gen after the next one, i.e. when DX11 hits the street, as to be honest it plays most games ok with high settings. However, I am right in the middle of a water cooling system rebuild and when I saw these prices reductions I thought bugger it, to save hassle stripping down my system again in 6-9months I'll get the gtx280 and clock it beyond the gtx285 and hopefully, since I only ever plan to play at 1680x1050, I wont have to change card until I do a full cpu and mobo change, maybe a couple of years down the line, and even then, maybe.
