Been thinking about checking out LOTRO, haven't touched it since beta so i thought it might be a good time to see were its at.

Is the trial the full graphics edition or is it the dumbed down version?

Also does anyone here still play?

If so could someone help me with a class comparison between wow's chars and LOTRO's?

Thanks.

It is the full deal with out the expansion, mail, /tell (I think tell works between trial players), auction house and trading. This is to stop the gold sellers.

You have nothing to loose apart from 40 hours of your life so give it a go.

The game is quite polished now with DX10 effects and all, looks the best out of all the mmos out there, except for age of conan which will be full dx10 in an upcoming patch :)

Do you know what the classes are compared to wow?

Which ones the "paladin" and so on.

I can't remember the WOW classes but the conqueror is the primary tank heavy armour class. Slow to solo and always in demand for groups.

The champion is a heavy armour wearing melee fighter dual wielder and effective off tank with a shield.

The Captain is a buff, tank fighter hybrid and comes with a human pet - medium armour (I think).

The Hunter is a ranged damage dealer and also dangerous close up. Fun and easy to play and effective at soloing but not that demand for groups.

Minstrel is a heavy armour healer and easy (a bit slow) to solo and very much in demand for groups.

Loremaster is a cloth wearing magic user with a pet - great damage dealing and crowd control. Effective at soloing when knowing your limitations and a good all rounder.

There are 2 new classes which come with the expansion.

Thanks for the reply.

Which class is the most beginner friendly?

I'm guessing the burglar is a "rogue" type class?

Conqueror should read Guardian. Don't forget the burglar class, which I think is one of the better classes to solo.
Too many games - I am getting my classes mixed up.

How can I forget the burglar :o I would like to try one for solo play but I have been rolling so many alts recently.

Yep

A hunter is beginner friendly and also fairly popular so not always in demand for groups. Why not try the burglar which I hear is fun to play.

From my limited knowledge of the game....

Hunters are very begineer friendly as they have higher movement rates and can teleport. They are a powerful solo class but a very popular choice and so not in high demand for grouping.

Guardians are relatively easy to solo albeit slow as they can't do massive damage to their foes. Quite high demand for grouping.

Burglar's can use stealth which is a great asset and makes solo play much easier. They also act as debuffers in groups and have quite a high demand.

Minstrels are healers and are always in very high demand. They are relatively slow to level when soloing however.

Champions are good to solo and can tank very effectively at high level. Also a popular class choice.

Captains are not the greatest class to solo but also not too bad either. They are certainly at their strongest in a group and are always in demand.

Hunters a great first class to level as assuming you go to the end then play some alt's the Hunter is by far and away the fastest to get around class and quickest to do a little ore/wood/leather farming for crafts and for a little cash so its a great alt to have to make your next alts easier. Pop on your hunter, port to the right place, get some leather and make them some armour, or give them some gold to buy weapons.

I wouldn't say any class is easier or harder than any other, realistically its never hard to play MMO's or use your skills. Hunters simply the best to do first because of travel powers and quick killing ability.

Taken a month or so off after playing for a month after the expansion, its a very good expansion with lots to do but the 2 new classes felt like a massive letdown to me. The Glass cannon caster is horrible to play through early levels IMHO, its supposed to get massively stronger after a while but I was bored getting there. Warden, its nice in theory lots of alternate moves to use, but in reality the choice of moves didn't provide much difference, I could use any combo's and really felt like I had similar survivability/damage output. If you try those two I'd leave them till last.

MIncers/burglars were great fun pre-expansion and were a little poo after, though theres always balancing issues and I'm sure at some point they'll be fun again.

Loads of people play, very rarely do you have to solo, likewise should you wish to solo you won't be overly crowded and having people stealing your kills constantly due to silly numbers of people doing the same quests.

there is a high res client file in the full game, not sure if its in the trial...

Laurelin/Snowbourn are massively populated ....

played all the classes and would probably say Huntard/Captain followed by Burglar/Guardian to start with ....,

never played WoW, never will so can't compare

still give the game 9/10 and still playing most nights

I would like to add that what makes the game special for me is the friendly and helpful community which is better than any of the MMO's I have played.

AoC has always looked crap. I don't know whether it's the setting or what have you but it just looked rubbish. The DX10 patch you are on about was suppossed to have been in from the start (6 months+ ago now?) so god only knows how badly it will be implemented.

LoTRO looks superb and plays well. I am still playing on Snowburn as a Hunter (Level 50 ATM only just got back into MoM). Very, very polished game with the best MMO community on there.

I tried the trial quite a few times now. It seemed like a decent game graphical and gameplay wise, however the game for me hitched like mad and made it really unplayable.

The FPS was good so I don't understand why it hitched so bad.

I think with LOTRO, hitching is quite a common problem, I tried everything people suggested and it didn't fix the hitching, so I uninstalled it.

I tried AOC again about a month ago and only lasted about a couple of days. Graphically the new shiny gloss of release graphics have worn off and I agree with you that LOTRO in DX10 mode looks better. With the new textures everything looks crisper and the lighting and shadows give it a lovely quality. The only thing LOTRO could do with is more bump mapping. The models in Conan look more detailed but overall the balance of how the graphics and the world is represented in LOTRO is better. AoC also feels claustrophobic which is not great for a MMO.

On the subject of graphics I recently started playing Vanguard again as my account has been reactivated for a free month or so. The game can look awesome and the world is huge so it's a pity more people do not play it as it is a much better game now than at time of release. It also has very interesting classes.

Me and the other half played the LOTRO trial and found it really quite good. What eventually put us off was the lack of diversity of classes, the game world itself being quite disorganised, and the abundance of fellowship quests with nobody to group with.

If we hadn't have come from WoW i'm sure we would have enjoyed it more, IMO it's not a patch on Blizzard's incarnation. Less polished.
