I know a few people on here pay close attention to the financial markets and some people like to travel, so I thought OCuk would be the best place to ask this question. :)

My girlfriend and I are looking to go on holiday in the spring. Perhaps for a long weekend, perhaps for a week.

We were planning to go somewhere on the continent but with the pound so weak against the Euro, that no longer sounds like the best idea.

So where do people recommend where we'll still get a relatively good deal on the exchange rate? Iceland, perhaps?

Iceland would be very good exchange rate wise, it's still reasonably expensive as it was always and expensive destination but it is a lot better value than it was.

Surely anywhere would be the same, the pound is weak against everything, Euro, Dollar, Yen. You just go to a place where its cheap to live, standard of living...etc

Vietnam? Surely your not just basing destination on exhange rate though?

Not entirely but I'd rather avoid places that are now poor value for money. A friend visited France recently and the exchange rate meant that he was paying £6 a pint!

If that's the case, I'd rather go to Iceland (where's it always been that much for a pint) as it wouldn't normally seem like a such a good deal.

Or maybe central/eastern Europe is the way forward?

That's a funny logic, what does it matter where you have that pint? Does it sound better when you tell the story in to the grandkids that you paid £6 pint, just becaues it was in Iceland it's okay.....

You wanted to "beat the economic downturn" yet you don't mind paying more money than at home for the same thing you can get back home.

Why not just find a nice quiet part of the UK that you haven't visited before? It's off-season, so prices should be very reasonable.

:)

If you want to save money, go on holiday in the UK. There are some wonderful places to visit and some great deals to be had...Plus, it keeps your money in our economy.

There are other countries in Europe that arent in the Euro:

Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Denmark, Sweden, Swizerland to name a few

Not all currencies have appreciated/depreciated the same against the pound.

I.e. The Yen has appreciated against the pound more than the US Dollar, for instance.
