Do I just switch on the PC and then press F8 key to choose setup and then 'boot from disc' eject the DVD tray and put in my Vista DVD?

Many thanks in advance

With the disk in the dvd tray, hit the F8 key to enter setup. Select Boot from disc. Then wait for the setup to start. Follow the instructions. Pretty straight forward.

Before you do any of it, make sure you have saved any data you want to keep onto disk or USB stick.

Many thanks for your reply. But I am doing this install on a different PC that doesn't have an operating system. So are you saying I should power it on first but I thought it's not possible to eject the dvd tray to put a disc in when there is no operating system installed???

I hope this pc will not be used for anything critical, like a nuclear reactor core control system or anything

It is perfectly possible, if you leave it powered on with no operating system on it, all you get after it's run a hardware test (POST) is an error message saying that there is no operating system present.

You can put the disk in once you have reached this stage, and then restart the pc.

Enter the setup and select boot from CD.

Follow the on-screen instructions and you can't go far wrong.

Assuming you're serious, the system will boot using the BIOS (which gives basic functionality like being able to read/write to drives, power the screen etc.) and then look for a device to boot from.

Every Windows install CD is bootable, which means that even if the HDD is empty you can still boot from it to begin the install.

Otherwise, how would system builders get it all working? :p

If you're messing around, then you're not funny, and clear off back to GD.

WOULD THERE REALLY BE ANY POINT IN PRESSING THE BUTTONS IF THE PC WASNT SWITCHED ON ? ? ?
