January Transfer Window Thread - rumours and signings here

As a Spurs fan, why do you want him back?

Bent has scored as many goals as he has this season.

Depth. Not exactly spoilt for choice on forwards.

That said, we now have our thrird choice striker back from begining of last season. Interesting.

I hope Bent doesn't go. I think he's had a rough deal at Spurs. He was in the shadows when Keane and berb were in the side, and this stupid Modric situation. I think he is a typical old fashioned instictive striker who relies on decent midfielder to do their jobs. It's crap that we are building a side around Modric, no matter how good he is.

I'm off to Spurs tonight, will he be playing?

Bent is injured.

It'll probably be Pav and Campbell upfront since Jenas and Huddlestone are both missing too.

That's the problem with being an old fashioned [striker/centre-half/playmaker/etc.] - the game has moved on. Modern players need to be versatile, rather than one-trick ponies.

Van Nistelrooy always managed ok without being so versatile.

Nistelrooy was a different class though. You're talking possibly the most deadly finisher to grace the Premier League and he had creative players all around him.

He was without doubt the deadliest poacher yes.

The point someone made was that Bent was old fashioned and wasn't versatile. Neither was Van Nistelrooy but it didn't affect him at all.

All I'm saying is so what if Bent is old fashioned and not versatile, it doesn't make him less of a player. Not all players have to be versatile.

I don't rate bent that highly, but for say max 7 to 8mil I'd take him at Newcastle as a replacement for Oba Martins when he finally realises he should leave

Breaking News on SSN: Zenit in talks with Arsenal for Arshavin :)

I dont understand what we need him for.

Just heard this myself. He'd be another forward that we probably don't need. Though if he's fit, I suppose with our injury situation I'd take him.

No doubt Zenith are aware of the problem, so no doubt will keep what is a really high price for him. Especially since he's cup-tied for Europe.

Better than nobody I suppose.

I know but now we have Defoe, it doesn't mean me have to play him and give him invaluable Prem experience for Utd's gain does it? ;)

No of course not

However he does seem to be playing reasonably for you (with crucial assists as well as a few crucial goals early in the season)

Also with four things still to play for I would suggest you need as many strikers as you can get - even if you play Campbell in the less important matches :)

I dont understand what we need him for.

Although other positions are more in need, I think we have been pretty bereft of ideas upfront in a number of games this season. With Fab, Wally and Rosi on long term (not to mention RvP could get injured at any minute) its not a bad buy.

I don't see it happening still due to fee and wages but if it does I hope its < £10mil and not anywhere near the £20mil that his agent wants.

Can Arshavin play on the wing? Is he fast? Didn't really take much notice of him in the Euro's until Russia's Final game when he was crap?

Why aren't we going for Apphia? He's free and would be a good DM until we can find someone more pernament, must be better than Song.

Arshavin does play on the wing and I would call him relatively fast. I wouldn't say he was stupidly quick but quick enough and very agile.

Not sure where this BS idea players have to be versatile came from. Rooney would be a better midfielder or a better striker if he stuck to a single position tbh. its better to have 11 players being the best they can be in all positions rather than have lots of versatile but not quite as good as they should be players chopping and changing.

The fact that the quality of the premiership is way down this year with all these workhorse run around like headless chicken strikers around doesn't seem a coincidence. Chelsea have won 3 in 10 games and are still right up at the top, would they not have dropped further behind in any other year?
Bent's quality, he might not be the best striker ever, but in 2/3 years he's barely had a chance to really perform, give him more than half a season of sporadic appearances to judge him tbh. being more versatile or being a better striker makes no difference when the midfield 4 changes everygame and underperforms, no amount of running fixes 10 other players playing badly. if those 4 players are working well theres no problem with any good striker no matter their style. If the 4 players behind are sucking massively, the striker won't have a decent chance in most games.

Arshavin I'm under the impression he prefers to play deep rather than as a striker, somewhere between a fabregas and a Bergkamp role in the middle, hence being touted as a replacement for Fabregas. Its a joke signing. in 4 months Fab is back, we have a bunch of quality strikers with 2 to come back from long term injury, where will his massive wages and expensive transfer fee fit into the squad next year?

For a man who won't spend money to ***** £15mil maybe on a player for 4 months seems insane, another sign of desparation from Wenger if it happens, and yet more proof he's meaning for us to play without a DM. Just as Fabregas was left without support, so will Arshavin and being a little bit of a primadonna I don't like the chances of him helping out defensively when Song and Denilson suck. Hey, he could turn out to be the best signing ever, who knows, its a huge risk and money that was without question need to spend on a DM.

Free = good value, something Wenger seems to not like anymore. To be fair when I try and think of whose available defensive midfield wise I come up short, only ones I can think of are either at top 4 clubs(in the big leagues) or, retired. I still can't get my head around why we don't play Toure or Eboue there, Song is just a joke. Surely selling song and not having to pay him plus any fee we might get(if incredibly lucky) would allow us to bring someone else in. its not perfect but when Silverstre was fit, why not clichy in the DM role, yes he's more attacking than defensive to a degree, still far more capable than Song. Hell just put a player whose physically capable of passing the ball to a team mate there and it would be an improvement.

Arshavin does play on the wing and I would call him relatively fast. I wouldn't say he was stupidly quick but quick enough and very agile.

Considering we've been playing Denilson out wide, the slowest least capable winger in the land, anything would be an improvement. But he seems to be seen as a central creative player as much as anything else. Inconsistant aswell.

He's not cup tied it says though. You're allowed to add one player to the list who played in the group but not the knock out stages yet, he'll be injured(or rested to increase his worth most likely) for the Roma game.
