Golf R32 is approaching affordable..

The 'most' I lug around is music equipment. Decks, speakers, amps, records etc. My '95 clio can manage my lot in one shot at the moment. I reckon a Golf can do the same, infact I know a base spec golf can do it, because my mate lugged my stuff when my car was in the garage. :)

Just seen a load of S3's for £6,000 with a fiver change, on Autotrader. Though I get the impression these are a different er.. genre of car?

True. As said by someone in another thread though. You adapt for the car you drive. If you can't lug stuff around then you may know someone else would can?

Both my cars are large hatchbacks (Saab 900 and 9000). It's amazing the number of times my old lodger pops round when he needs to buy or move something large :D.

What are maintenance costs like on an Impreza? Would easily fit your luggage in, and if they drink fuel it won't matter so much with your mileage :)

*Just read - "Hatchback"*

Last time I looked (a few months ago) at the VAG R32 models, the Audi A3 R32 was cheaper than the Golf R32.

less than 2,000miles a year? Dude why not buy something that is ******* mental with change for a nice bike to get to work? :)

Budget, mostly. Anything more than about £9,000 and I'll need a loan :)

Infact, I'll probably need a loan for anything more than £5,000-£6,000 as I'm moving soon. I've already looked at Skylines and the like :p

Also I'm not a total piston head. I won't want to be under the bonnet every weekend because things aren't just right, nor because the car will require it. I'd like something that is not going to mind being sat still for a few weeks at a time, can lug my gear around, and has a nice bit of poke. :)

I would recommend looking at an S3 as well, but then I'm biased. The R32 and S3 are essentially the same car. The 4WD system is identical. The chassis on the facelift S3 is slightly better in my opinion (2001 onwards). The only real difference is the engine. Both produce 225bhp (S3 from 08/2001 onwards) but the S3 is more tunable. You'll see 260-265bhp with a simple remap if modifications are your thing. The S3 is also more efficient with the old fuel if that has even the slightest affect on your decision! When I compared the two myself, I couldn't really understand the R32 when you can have an S3 for cheaper.

To be honest, you could get a good A3 for that money....probably even a 3.2lt Quattro with gadgets. The R32 is a smashing car in my opinion, though I wouldn't spend £9k on it, maybe £7k...

The Focus ST + remap would be my purchase in that price range/spec.

After thinking about it for a bit i'd spend about £2000 on a totally average but nice car.

I'd put the rest towards a decent home cinema (seeing as though you're moving soon) as you'd benefit a whole lot more if you spend most of your time at home.

Jenk;

R32 - limited edition, getting rarer, 4wd, torquey v6, brilliant noise, presense.
ST - mass produced, its a ford o_O, torque steer.

i can guarantee you wont be disappointed, and as soon as you test drive one you will be hooked. make sure the window is downa bit :p
