Watch repair con or not

It sounds alarmingly common, good thing you didn't snooze on this scam. The battery leak fob off is a complete wind up.

Just to stick up for the "cleaning" brigade, I just paid £400 odd quid to get my breitling serviced/cleaned and to fix a condensation issue it had.. The results were amazing, it was like getting a brand new watch back!

Do you mean they cleaned the exterior to make it look like new? If not then surely a watch either works or doesn't, if it was to lose 1 second every hour then it's hardly the end of the world.

I would say it sounds like a scam, took my wifes watch to the local key cutting place the other day and they changed the battery in 2mins and charged £3 so having to send them off seems strange to me!

p.s. yes I have never owned a watch that cost over ~£80 so don't know if expensive watches need special equipment to change the battery.

I had my father's watch repaired a while ago, always make sure I got advice from multiple places.

Basically all it needed was a battery, one place quoted £160 just to begin to look at it and the other place was £1.50 to try a battery :) It hadn't been working for years and even when the battery went in, it didn't work for about 30 secs.

its not a digital watch so servicing (as i understand it) isnt a case of winding it up and sending it back, in my case I got new hands, face and crown and also got lesson in how unwaterproof this particular time piece is! exterior wise I got a new crystal and the strap and other extremities have had an amazing polish, this was fast becoming my least favourite watch now its right back up there with the best of them

I bought a Tag from Goldsmiths a number of years ago and last time I needed it servicing to replace the battery, I took it back into the store. The only way to service it was for it to be sent back to Tag for them to do it.

Now, unless things have changed and Goldsmiths do it, then surely this charge has come from either Tag, or it's been added on by Goldsmiths. I guess ringing Tag and trying to find out using your model number might be worth a shot.

didn't think you had had it that long

er, didn't someone tell you that when you bought it ;)

*cough* blitzwatches *cough*

to be fair it never crossed my mind and I've been diving, swimming, skiing etc.. with it on so it's actually a lot more durable then breitling would have you believe, although consider me told now I shant make that mistake again

infact, i'm after a panerai much like yours :p

may not have been to yourself but someone on here bought a watch which was 30m waterproof and I explained that,as daft as it sounds, 30m is not enough for swimming

they really ought to redo the classification system so it is not as misleading

sold the Panerai a while back, do regret it though :(

There was an article on yahoo news a little while back about watchmakers dying out because the older ones are dying and retiring. Supposedly you can earn a good living repairing high end watches. Interesting stuff.

meh about the panerai :(

and yeah it wasnt me but I only found out about the 30m thing a year or two ago (and ignored it!)

and yeah my watch is classed as barely splash proof and definitely not to be worn in the shower, lol bearing in mind the abuse I subjected it to :D

Could it be that these jeweller's are using the same company to actually repair the watches?
