so after I've been buying most of my kit for a new build i finally get to choosing a CPU and im now stuck. I'm buying my parts slowly so money will be there. the problem is what to buy. my new case can only support Matx Mobo's and this is my dilemma. i was intending on investing in a C2Q and a DFI lanparty JR P45. but now ive been looking into things. the i7 technology is out and its not as obscenely expensive as i thought...well..until you get to the higher stuff.

well...ideally id LIKE to go there but there doesnt seem to be an small for motherboards that utilise the i7 platform. and memory seems to be quite expensive too!!

I'm more than technically capable...but with this new platform there seems to be a lot of things i need to understand.

so what do you guys think. stick to current 45nm tech or go i7? around the £260+ mark is what i have to spend on a CPU. and im quite stumped.

thanks

im not gonna be buying anytime soon. (next 4 to 8 weeks)

If you call £700+ for the bottom range motherboard, 6gb of ram and cpu not much money, can I have some of yours ??? lol

Its actually a little less than that now. I'm looking to upgrade all my stuff and have been hitting all the major sites to see what the best prices are.

So far the i7 920 retail can be picked up for £227 delivered. Which isn't too bad considering if i can get £110-120 for my Q6600 then £100 to go to the i7 is reasonable. But its the motherboards that are really stopping people from upgrading. I really want the Asus Palm edition board but its just way too much . Even if i get £100 for my old board.
I've seen the Asus P6T Deluxe for £217 delivered but that was the cheapest i could find here in the uk. The most annoying thing is it can be had for less than £170 in the states which i'd be more than happy to pay but the postage makes it a no go.

Also does anyone know if OC do price match or anything. Ideally i'd like to buy all my bits from one place like ocuk.

my god thats brilliant...gotta read more to understand tech. thanks so much.

It only does sli* at 8X [PCIE2] per slot. So only of interest to me for 2 reasons.

a) its the only uatx 790 chipset board out at the moment that I've seen.
b) I might change my mind about buying another 4850 to sli* this year, instead of just buying a new card when the 4850 becomes too slow... but I dont really see that as a smart move.

*I hate the term crossfire.

no im quite sure it works at x16. its the old DFI JR P45 that worked at 8x. ive been following this and the old board for a while..though someone actually got the old board to work at x16. no idea how.

as for a Uatx 790. there will soon be another hopfully.

yeah tell me about it. i found this in CAD for around $290. so its gonna be around £250 im gonna assume.

im buying slowly so im in no rush to just blow money away. motherboard isnt bugging me to be honest. its the ram thats irritating me. i had the notion of getting 8gb ddr2 when i was still considering the q6600. now its a while diffrent league. triple channel is frigging expensive. really hoping for it to drop a little so i can go for 12gb 1600mhz.

PCIE2 has double the bandwidth of PCIE1 and 1.1, so 8x is the same as 16x bandwidth on the old slot, this would not bottleneck xfire of 4850s.
