Anyone travelled on their own?

I can vouch for NZ, the only downside is you'll come back and will never be content in this country again.
I would say something similar but not as extreme about Oz, and possibly Canada. In other words, I think I'd be very happy living in either, but I'm just as happy back home. The 'same old same old' bleakness is made up for by being close(ish) to friends and family.

I spent a month travelling around Oz on my own, and I've been to Canada twice, US 9 times, all on my own. Admittedly all of this has been hotels and organised transport, and some of it has been for work (meeting people at the destination) rather than play, but travelling around really isn't that hard. All I will say is that it's often more expensive on your own unless you go the backpacker/hostel/slum it route.

You need to be careful, especially now. Do you have anything more important that you should use that money for? Are you sure you'll get a job when you come back before running out of money?

But, as long as you've been sensible and thought it through rather than going on inpulse, then if you can, DO IT!

I wet to Australia on my own, good and bad, i really could have done with a good friend when over there at times but i got through ok and met quite a few good people.

Been to Madagascar and Philippines by myself and absolutley loved both expierences. Madagascar was the best expierence of my life. People are wonderful and the wildlife is beyond any words. Only time i ever felt lonely on either trip was the occassional meal by myself. Met lots of other travellers and ex-pats which kept me very happy. You get to do what you want, when you want, thats the beauty of it all. Plus pulling is a lot easier when you're by yourself!

Its been ages since ive been on abroad last time I was a nipper and with the parents!

What am I going to need to take? How would I go about getting in contact with someone back home if something happened? Taking money with me etc..etc... wouldnt even know where to start with anything like this.

Make sure your mobile phone is tri-/quad-band. If you haven't got one, get one. Get it enabled for roaming. It might be an expensive choice for phoning home, but you want it for emergencies, right.

Money - take what you need for the first few days, sort the rest out when you get there. Providing you avoid the sharks you'll usually get deals that are comparable or better than back home. Don't rely on plastic when travelling in/through less developed countries or remote areas.

Make sure you get the passport and any other travel documents (e.g. visas) sorted well ahead of time, and see your GP practice nurse about 3 months before you go if you think you'll be going anywhere remote and might need vaccinations.

Get a phone card for calling will save you loads.

Australia was great, did Sydney, Brisbane and Cairns.

Loads of backpackers and the hostels are wild, and were tons of people on a solo travel.

My sister actually emigrated to Australia so i did have contacts over there but i was on my own after that. I met a group including one Isreali guy, one Dutch guy and one English lass and various otehrs and we pretty much hung about for a couple of months.

If you can afford it then i would recommend it.

Just stay in Hostals matey, you meet more randomers that way.

That's all my mate does, he goes away atleast twice a year on his own, and always stays in a Hostal so as to meet people.

I moved and lived in Korea, then Poland on my own. It's not that daunting once you get there if you are capable of talking to folk.

As someone else said, if you stay in hostels, you will almost always meet folk to go out with.

Divaboy ill come find you if/when I make it out there ;)

Sounds way to tempting, only downside is finding work when I get back! I got money to support me so I got time at least.

Going to town tomorrow to sort my passport out as well been trying all week but due to various mistakes its still to be sent ;)

Worry about work when/ if you come back. In the VERY short term its easier t find any sort of job ....

You only get one chance on trips like this

EDIT BEATEN TO IT!

Travelling on my own back in 2005 in japan for 6 months gave me some of the best memories ever, still so vivid to this day and i am still in contact with the main core group of people i met.

one word of warning though, travelling can be addictive so be warned you may not want to stop...i know i don't . i am hopefully going back to japan for the 5th time at the end of the month.

Travelling on your own is a must , but i depend it comes down to what kind of person you are. I dont mind being on my own and entertaining myself when i need too and dont really suffer from homesickness.

go for it

Tim

Go for it, you wont be alone for long. Particularly if you do the Oz Experience and Kiwi Experience type tours. We ended up meeting people that we would stick with for weeks on end travelling around (this happened several times with different groups of people), would go back at the drop of a hat.

im going to thailand in may for a month on my own. Im planning 1 week group tour and hopefully make some friends and carry on round thailand with them or just going it alone!

So with these sort of things, do you book like a package holiday as such (Obviously very loose) or just a return flight and see how things pan out?
