Hi guys i upgraded today and my CPU is sitting 53 - 57 idle i have not changed any clock settings in bios and using standard cooler came with it i thought it was thermal paste so i took off what was supplied any put it on again but still high there is plenty of room in case do i need a better CPU cooler?? any advice would be great

I'm running a 9950 at 3Ghz, sometimes at 3.1 but I get the odd bluey.

I'm using the Ultra 120 Extreme with a 120mm fan on it, the case also has an exhaust 120mm fan at the back and for good measure I've put a 120mm fan intake fan at the front of the case. I'm running in the low 30s at idle, using AS5 tim, the case is a Sonata 3.

My 4870 is kept well cool as well with a HR-03 GT (92mm fan), that thing is mad, low 30s at idle and when I thrash the graphics I am only getting just into the 50s, it's a good setup...

As Gareth has stated look at your case cooling, it sounds like you have checked the CPU out but some AS5 (just enough!) and rub some in/over the heatsink and wipe it off before applying a dot or cross or however you do your tim, it gets into all the little imperfections if you do that, good luck;

hoping that helps,

regards,
J.

Edit. My motherboard is the M3A-32 MVP Deluxe jobbie with WIFI/AP, also the crappy/stupid SB600...

Your Asus motherboard is probably overvolting the Phenom. Mine did ;)

Make sure the CPU Voltage (CPU VID) is set to 1.3V MAX. The 9850 takes between 1.15 and 1.3V afaik.

Yep that sounds a bit hot but nothing to worry about. I've got the cooler in my sig running a 9950BE in an Antec 300 (stock setup) and the core idles at 28-30deg C on air. (I've not taken the Phenom beyond 3ghz and it still only went up to 33.)

If your worried though you're probably best replacing the stock cpu cooler with a replacement as suggested. AS5 is the best paste out there and as bridder said, don't use too much. :)

I have ordered a new case Thermaltake Spedo Advanced has a lot of fans in it so i hope that it brings the temp down its sitting at 60 idle now not good, at the moment i have coolermaster wavemaster with 2 80 fans at front and 1 80 at the back, after the case if its still the same i will get a cpu cooler

Something is wrong, the stock cooler should not have it at 53 degrees idle. Stock coolers these days are up to the job compared to where we were with Athlons and Prescotts. You should be looking at 40 tops.

Are you sure you're reading the correct temperature, and are you sure you've correctly fitted the heatsink assembly?

Have you tried checking the voltage ?! (use something like PCProbe). Manually set it to 1.3V in the BIOS and see how that effects your temps.
