After 12 years of my taxi service, my missus finally decided to have some driving lessons. She failed the first test for speeding but passed at the second go. I put her on my insurance, and she has been driving my car when its available for the past few weeks.

The time has come to get a 2nd car. Money is tight at the moment, and to cut a long story short, we are currently paying for some Irresponsibility on her part, money wise.

So, its me thats coughing up the dosh. I have about £1500. She will probably do 6k a year max, to and from work and to the supermarket. ;)

Insurance should not be too bad, because she is over 30, and I have 7 years PNCB.

Problem is, I really don`t know where to start. Because I work so far from home, My wage is "topped up", and I have only ever bought nearly new cars. I have them for 2-3 years and then swap.

Had a look at some Fiestas, KA`s, Punto`s and Clio`s, and prices seem to go from cheap to extreme on similar cars. Is private buying risky? Is buying from a garage less so? What should I expect to get for that kind of money? I don`t want to get anything too big, as It wont fit in our garage.

Sorry to sound so naive, but this is new to me, and I don`t want to buy her a nail, or worse still, a death trap.

Any tips would be really appreciated. :)

a 1.25 fiesta would probably be a good bet. What ever you get judge on age and condition over milage. Also make sure its got a full service history
