Having a hunt around the local garage today I found a cracking MG ZS180, and was just wondering from current owners what they're like on fuel.

Seems lovely, just with all this fuel price uncertainty around is it a good idea go get a 2.5 V6? :p

Some figures combined with how you drive it would be lovely. :)

Phate won't be far off surely but he drives his pretty hard :) It'll be a good indication for what you couldn't possibly get worse mpg than :p

Oil shot up to nigh on $50 a while ago but has dropped slightly once more in the past few days. I don't think anyone is really sure what the trend is set to be.

It went up because it kicked off in Gaza and Russia showed off its new muscle, back down to low of $40 today sitting at $41.40 now - if it does go up, by by 82 p/l

My Mitsubishi Galant 2.5 V6, and also my mum's Mondeo ST24 get between 25mpg and 37mpg depending on how they're driven, so I'd imagine the MG would be about the same.

25mpg = lots of hard acceleration around town etc.
29-32mpg = typical "normal" town driving
34-35mpg = 70 on motorway/dual carriageway
37-38mpg = 60 on motorway/dual carriageway

Me too.

Anyway, Phate doesn't seem to get through that much fuel even though he drives like the accelerator is stuck down. :p

Well thanks guys :p

My last tank through mixed driving and a whack of hoonage I got 18mpg....but turns out my car has been using too much fuel as it was overdue for a service and 2 of the spark plugs were knackered so the car was misfiring :D

Around town and general use you'll get anywhere between low to mid 20's on a motorway if your an extra special boy you'll get mid 30's.

I normally get 250 - 270miles out of a 55L tank :)

Any other questions about it please ask, I did a summary about the ZS not too long ago which pretty much covers everything, I'll dig it out when I get back from the chip shop.

you need to get your car looked at! My ST220 gets 340 miles from 60 litres, thats mainly town driving. My impreza got 250 miles from a tank (cant remember the capacity, around 60 litres too).

Here we go...
Did somebody say MG? :D

Right, first...the bad.

Common issues with these are (as already said) - VIS valves, £55 each to replace, the inlet plenum tends to go at around 60k - £450 to replace. That's about it...the KV6 engine in general is solid. Mine does see the redline a lot and I'm currently in Manchester and the car didnt miss a beat all the way up here.

The seats are very comfy, I think all the pre-facelift ones come with half leather seats to match the outside of the car.

Also the rear bumper on all of these does 'sag' - this is due to the fact they are not fitted properly. A simple fix brings it back into alignment :)

If you are looking for comfort features then look elsewhere. It has aircon and front electric windows.....the list pretty much ends there. The short shift gearbox is awesome, the car is relatively quick. Oh, at 60k it needs a cambelt change, budget £500 - £700 to do this. Me and a friend are currently looking into it ourselves to save an absolute packet.

The handling on these is fantastic, very similar setup (if not the same) as the Integra. Make sure you treat it with decent rubber and the car will look after you.

Most parts bar body panels are readily available. Most are written off if so much as a moth hits the wing mirror because you can't get hold of them.

Oh, you'll be pleased to know they have started making the KV6 engine again so soon parts won't be a rip off :)

Go and test drive one, they are a lot of fun and I think you willbe surprised
by how likeable they are. I wouldnt say it was a car for a 50yo though.

I paid £2.5k with 60k on the clock and FSH, and mines an 02 plate. There was a Trophy Blue (best colour ofcourse ;)) 04 plate with 30k on the clock sold for 3k the other day...so there are bargains to be found!

Long and short of it really, at the minute these is a zed going for £1250 on PH! - bargain of a car.

That is 27mpg, which is absolutely exceptional for large 3.0L car driven around town, there was no way my 1.8L Civic could manage that in the city,

Its just a case of being lightfooted in towns where 30 and 40 limits apply and avoiding stop start traffic along with heavy braking and acceleration. There are some motoroway journies included in that 340 miles though.

TBH though....if your worried about fuel economy...the 180 is not the car for you.

It is an awesome car which gives the owners a lot of fun but its by no means cheap to have either.

I think different people have different ideas of what town driving is. I think if they can see buildings out the window its town driving irrespective of the sort of road they are driving on.

To me, town driving is short journeys around a city centre, stop start, from stone cold. Under these circumstances there is no way in hell a Mondeo ST220 would get 27mpg. Heck I only got 25mpg from my 2.0 Mondeo in proper town driving.
