After 18months service, my EVGA 8800 GTS SuperClocked 640MB died in December but, luckily, was still under the 2y warranty, so was duly shipped off to Germany for replacement.

I've just got back the replacement, a still shrink-wrapped retail boxed EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GT 512MB card.

I'm very happy with the speed of the replacement service but not hugely happy with the actual replacement... it seems I've been downgraded, as I bought a 640MB SuperClocked 8800 GTS (model number 640-P2-E825-AR) and have received a replacement 512MB 8800 GT (model number 512-P3-N800-TR).

I'm having difficulty finding a full specification for the 8800GTS model as even the EVGA website has no information on a 2y old card!

The spec on the 'new' card seems to be:

GPU/VPU: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
RAMDAC: Dual 400 MHz
Maximum Resolution: 2560 x 1600 (Digital)
Video Memory: 512MB
Memory Type: GDDR3
Core Clock: 600 MHz
Memory Interface: 256-bit
Memory Clock: 1800 MHz
Shader Clock: 1500 MHz
Stream Processors: 112
Memory Bandwidth: 57.6GB/sec.
Interface Type: PCI Express 2.0
Interface Speed: x16

I realise that nVidia have changed specs a lot and made confusing model numbers, but I'm not convinced that the spec of the new card is equal to the spec of the old card, as it was an overclocked 640MB card.

I wasn't expecting a brand new 280 for a replacement but neither was I expecting a card with less RAM and, possibly, a lower spec.

Or am I missing something?

check out http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17960991 which is my own RMA story on a card replaced this week...

I got a 9600GT back which I am none too impressed with on an 8800GTS 540, so I guess they are at least acknowledging that yours was superclocked by giving you an 8800GT.

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=544&card2=475 these figures would suggest you have done rather better than me in the replacement stakes, but as in my situation what's on papaer isn't always "how it is" and of course these figures do not relate to the superclocked version.

Good luck getting anything changed if you try, so far I have found them to be down right ignorant.

It has less onboard RAM but more stream-processors.

8800gt is a good replacement for the older 640 gts, i replaced my 640 with the newer g92 gts and the difference was quite substantial, the 8800gt is slightly lower spec than the g92 gts but still a lot better than your older card.

Many thanks, that's just what I needed.

So I do, in fact, have an upgrade, even though the reduction in RAM made it feel like a downgrade... I guess I'm happy, especially after normski_'s recent experience.

Thanks all.
Yep certainly an upgrade, my old bfg 640 gts is in a second machine, if it ever fails and i have to rma to bfg, and i receive an 8800gt, id be a happy bunny:)

I also need to return a failed 8800gtx back to EVGA.

I am a bit concerned that I could possibly receive a 9800gtx 1gb card as a replacement. Raven are you happy with your card and how long did the process take?.

It doesnt help reading on other posts here that people with BFG are receiving a 260 as a replacement for their 8800gtx's.

Am I being silly?. Is a 9800 gtx 1Gb a worthy replacement?.

I just feel the smaller bus, slower memory albeit larger and the premium I paid for this card deserves better.

Any advice guys?.

Surely its just down to the performance of the replacement rather then the spec and the 9800GTX is equal if not faster than the 8800GTX.

It appears to be just as fast as my old card. It scores higher in 3Dmark06 than my 8800GTX SC. I use my PC for watching Bluray movies and the new card is light years ahead in performance. My old card used to stutter on fast moving panning shots in movies (Like all the IMAX shots on Dark NIght) which i always put down to 3:2 Pulldown. Films are as smooth as silk now, very pleased.

Its also only needs 1 6pin power connector so it must use less power too.

I sent my card away via post office on 5th January and received my replacement card
19 Jan 08. Cost about 12.00 GBP to send via Airsure with 400.00 GBP insurance.

Im still testing the card and I will report back if I get any problems with performance.
