Should we bail out Landi & Jag?

If they bail it out it needs to be a total buy out and then state owned, not a loan to another company.
Same as they should have nationalized the banks they bailed out.

As an ex LR employee, I want to put the record straight.
LR have made profits for the last 5 years, Jag have made a loss for the last 5 years.
And to the poster who said it is an overmanned industry, believe me it is not, years ago it was, but not now.
I do not think they should be bailed out, as TATA have more than enough capital to shore up there aquisitions.

Do they even actually need a bail out? I thought the government was only getting in involved to help secure the companies against job losses... I.e. giving them a bit of cash to keep a few 1,000's of workers employed that would have otherwise been layed off.

The "rescue package" that occured in the USA was to save the companies from total collapse, i.e. bankruptcy.

Government is so hypocritical.

"Don't buy Land Rovers or Jags - they kill the planet and emit SO much CO2...."

Yet it's piling in cash to save them!

And the PM and all his henchmen get driven around London in Jags too...

I think that's exactly whats happening listening to local news. While Tata is a very large company it apparantly isn't viable to keep all the staff and without a - relatively small compared to what's happened with the banks - loan from the government they were going to have to lay off some workers to avoid much bigger problems later.

The figure being talked about was "only" £1bn i think.

They went into a lot more detail on the radio, any redundancies would be R&D staff rather than floor workers initially.

There will be no 'bailout' to JLR, and Tata have stated they do not want any. The government are helping with restructuring the businesses, but no bailout.

The Media storm was over the automotive industry group (whatever its called) in the UK approaching the government for assistance and loans, JLR seemed to be pulled out and labelled with the Media explode gun with references to 'bailouts' coined for the USA lot.

One programme I was working on has now been canned to save development and production costs.

Few minor points about that:

1) Tata, or more properly Tata Consultancy Services, has been a technology partner of Scuderia Ferrari since 2005.
2) Tata is also engaged in a joint venture with Fiat over car production, this being the same Fiat that owns Ferrari.
3) Where has it been stated that millions of dollars are being paid to Ferrari for this? It could just be an extension of the existing agreement, now that Tata and Fiat have other projects in the pipeline.

4) Tata isn't a country :D

Tata Motors has today reported a profit after tax for Jaguar Land Rover of £238m for the second quarter of the 2010/2011 financial year.

Just thought id point out TATA recently bought Corus, which means their manufacturing costs for LR/Jag will drop as they can supply themselves the metal at cost. This means more job stability at both LR/Jag and Corus /cheer Guess they know what their doing :)

Nice idea but Ratan Tata has commented on that before saying he wants to keep the business functioning as seperate entaties, ie Corus remaining competitive in the industry without relying on easy contracts from JLR. That said most the platforms are going to ally anyway.
