Mum who couldn't afford Christmas gifts for her kids wins £1million on a scratchcard

Bristol millionaire scratchcard winner Maria Murray has returned to her £5-per-hour cafe job - serving fry-ups at 6am.

Mum-of-four Maria, 41, got up at 5am on Thursday morning to start her shift despite winning £1million on Christmas Eve.

She has not spent a penny of the win and said she couldn't wait to return to the greasy spoon in Avonmouth, where she earns just £50 per week.

She said: ''If I stayed at home or bought a big posh house I'd be bored out of my head and wouldn't know what to do.

I think that is really sad. To have zero aspirations and go back to a minimum wage job when you don't need to.

People can find plenty of things to keep them occupied, sitting in a big house does not have to be one of them.

But she likes her job and it keeps her happy, the £50 has got nothing to do with it.

I'd hope so too but the reality is a lot of them will waste money just like the degenerate ***** in this article. Unless of course all the council flats with sky dishes etc.. are a result of the entire estate all getting jobs and having a surplus of cash.

Yeah wow. Great opinion you have there.

So she's a degenerate *****...for being a waitress?

Ooooooookay then.

Good for her. Everyone slates her saying how she'll blow the money and then she doesn't and returns to her job.

Oh wait, I forget, we must all judge her regardless of what she does because she is poor. Yeah, sounds fair.

If the best you can do when winning 1 million pounds is work in a cafe I would feel sorry for anyone.

Its really really void of imagination. I'm not saying waste it on stupid holidays etc but life is too short.

...and the OcUK snobbery bug strikes again. I can't believe how many people are up their own arses on here.

Because money obviously isn't important to everyone.

If it was, we'd all have serious problems as everyone would all of a sudden be viewing minimum wage jobs as 'beneath them'.

Its ridiculous really. So she should blow some of it but not too much but enough to waste a fair amount and then randomly quit her job and do what exactly?

Its not about the money, its about being able to do whatever you want.

When you were small did you think I know I would love to work in a cafe, I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it but its hardly anyones first choice.

Its about dreams and imagination, if you have them you can make them happen.

Maybe her dream was to have a family.

Who knows.

Because your going to be at uni for over 20 hours a week, unless your doing some mickey mouse course. My timetable necessitates being at uni 26 hours a week, then there's travelling time as well.

This is a bit pedantic but you could do a large amount of work while at uni... Last semester I had 20 hours of lectures and seminars per fortnight and this coming semester I will have 14 per fortnight. If I worked evening shifts I could work every day. (I do law at the university of manchester btw)

Still, whilst it may be possible I certainly wouldn't recommend it!

Its rife on here. People think that everyone in the country must be scum if they arent earning 25k +

The reality is that some people are happy in very average jobs.

Working evenings isn't full time though. Full time is typically 38 hours a week, I have 20 hours of lectures which requires me being there at least 26 hours due to the timetable arrangement, officially finishing at 6pm on 3 days means even evening shifts are out!

I don't think anyone was talking about the money, just that working in a cafe is not achieving anything, many would consider doing voluntary work more worthwhile.

The woman works, obviously not for the best wage but seems to take care of her children, wants to buy her house and give her kids 100,000 each... not like shes spending dole money on scratch tickets and her kids live in squalor.
