As to the Merc taxi, fairly common in Europe from what I have seen. Every taxi I saw in Portugal a few years back was a Merc

Yup, looks like Geneva to me. There are some seriously nice cars there - i was sitting down waiting for a tram when a 911 GT2 came along closely followed by a Nissan GT-R, very nice.

I wouldn't say so, there used to be a fleet of Mercedes taxis around Dundee for a good few years, admittedly they've now replaced them with Skodas but it certainly isn't a posh area.
