She's thinking of spending 10k on a second hand boxster and it seems like some good deals are out there. Anyone got any things we need to look out for before we book a few test drives?

Ape.

Just don't go for just a "Boxster" and don't get the auto.

Is there actually anything wrong with the auto?

to the OP, go look on some of the boxster forums, there are some great write ups on what to expect and what to look out for.

Once she has the Boxster though; she may feel a failure for not being able to afford a 911 ;)

I wouldnt go for a Z4, - very wierd shape, all squashed at the rear and elongated at the front - she may not have enough spacial awareness and might dent it :p

In a proper sports car, everything is wrong with an auto box. I suppose the said wife has probably chosen it for it's badge and convertible top rather than it's driving ability though, so in this case an auto would work.

Quite right. SHe wants it for purely cosmetic reasons. Doesn't mean I don't want a good drive when I rag the t*ts off it at the weekends. ;)

Looking at the 2.7L as those ones mostly fit in our price range.

Cracking little car the Boxster but the non S models do feel a little flat in my experience and the 986 versions have the old interior, which can be a little creaky on some older cars. Always buy on condition and history rather than miles as the Boxester will have no issues with miles. I would want a full OPC or reputable indi set of service stamps and receipts and make sure you check for oil leaks around the rear main oil seal which might be an issue (costing £1500 to fix) on an older car. Oil around the seal is not a problem but oil leaking from the seal is.

Most Porsches need fettling to get the most from them and you should get it on a ramp and have a good look around for damage, leaking suspension or signs of abuse. The handling is very safe so they are not prone to the same problems as 911's and don't have the bum ended tendancies of the big brother but they do share many of the same bits which are still pricy if they go wrong.

..and personally I would avoid a Tiptronic which is simply a sluggish auto box which really has no place in a sports car.

Get a warranty that covers intermediate shaft failure as if/when it fails (and it does in about 25% of cars apparently) then that's a £7k bill to fix!

S2000 I can see, but the MR-S is tiny. It's in a completely different league, and more comparable to the previous MX-5 than either a Boxster or Z4.

The MRS is down on power (a lot) to the boxer, however I feel it's a nicer car.

And for 10k you can always find a slightly older car with the swapped 2zz engine :P

Avoid the auto and the 2.5,infact try and get an s because even the 2.7 is a bit limp wristed.avoid anything with above 18" alloys, make sure it has full porshe service history and avoid grey, too common.

I've not owned either but I've had the use of an auto boxster for a couple months and had a Z4 hire car on a two week holiday and, of the two, I'd have the boxster every time. Loved the boxster - hated the Z4.
