I read that the ati radeon 4870 x2 micro stutters were as the geforce gtx 295 does not.

When i the prices drop i was thinking about getting the ati radeon 4870 x2 next month but ive had my share ive had m share of micro stuttering in the past and its annoying.

I thought by using v-sync which sycronises the framerate to the LCD refresh cures this? most people running high end cards i would have thought would run with v sync at any rate as who wants t spend 300+ on a top end card to then put up with ugly shearing and tearing

Yet another one of those "Forum myths". One person says it, then it get's passed on, then goes to another forum "so it must be true"

Ignore it, it's "Snake oil" and should be treated a such.

I've also heard that you must have PhysX or face being left behind, ATi drivers are awful and the X2 doesn't feel fast despite having high FPS.

'Micro' stuttering meaning exactly what please? I assume it just means stuttering, like jumping / jerking slightly. Indeed very annoying and no I haven't had any. :)

I should have also said, I haven't noticed any microstuttering since the first driver I had on it (8.8 or something), and a lot of the negative stuff people paint about it I haven't noticed either.

ill second that, and im not anti ATI before someone bits my head off either:)

I don't have those problems though, just swinging back at a lot of the stereotypes :p I was going to switch to a 280 but only on the basis of arbitary (sell the X2 for more than what I got for it and buy a £230 280) but I didn't want to downgrade despite the potential of cash coming back.

im getting better performance with my 280 then i did with the 4870X2 now i have just put it down to drivers but all the same lots of other ppl have had good experiences with their 4870x2s

I would have thought any setup that is rendering different frames in parallel will have microstutter. I doubt most people notice this and also I guess it depends on the game and the situation in the game as to how bad it is.

Take a theoretical example lets say we are rendering at roughly 100fps (10ms per frame) with 2 gpus rendering alternate frames.

So at the start of the scene both gpus kick off rendering frames, at roughly 20ms into the scene one of the gpus has rendered it's first frame and it gets displayed. Probably within 1ms the other gpu has now finished it's first frame and displays it.

We now have to wait around 20ms more before we get another frame. Isnt that the essence of microstuttering?

I realise there are other techniques to alternate frame rendering but it is commonly used I believe.

Only time micro stutter really becomes an issue is crossfireX with cards with a big difference in performance i.e. 4870 and 4850.

Which is all great in theory, but in reality I certainly don't get it (anymore) and quite a lot of others don't either. The X2 for me has been an absolutely amazing graphics card.

I noticed it in earlier driver releases and I looked for it hard in recent driver releases and it isn't there, with VSYNC on or off, with AI normal or advanced etc etc etc

Granted people do have problems with the X2, but it's quite boring to see the same spiel about this and that being crap etc etc....

Never had an issue with mirco stuttering and was one thing i was worried about with my x2, card has been fantastic since i got it!

For some more reassurance, I too have never experienced (micro)-stuttering on my 4870x2 since purchase. Obviously if I hooked it up to a 50inch plasma and put FSX to MAX settings I would expect to see stutter!
