wife wants a boxster

We are all different, but an MR2 simply isn't close to a Boxster in going, stopping, steering or putting a smile on your face. I am not saying the MR2 isn't a nice little car, just no Boxster though it could be argued that for £10K you'll get a nicer example of an MR2 than you will of a Boxster.

It's a wife car, in all likelihood, she won't care about 0-60, handling, stopping or how good it is compared to 'x'. Anything discussed in this thread would be more than enough for her and whilst I wouldn't buy a 2.7 Boxter, it will feel like an F1 car to her. My missus thinks the MX5 is fast, I find it frustrating on acceleration. An MR2-S would be lovely, providing you can deal with the lack of storage and will be newer and cheaper to maintain than the Porka. The BMW is a better car, but is more of a blokes car than a wife-mobile.

I may be wrong on this front, but the OP's wife wants a Porsche convertible and that is what the OP should buy her, regardless is its the best or not. If she gets the BMW, she will pick up every niggle and complain about it and how it doesn't look as nice as the Porka.

I have driven both and out of the box the better car is clearly the Boxter.

In my humble opinion though, pure driving pleasure was greater in the MR2 with as good as if not better performance 0-60.

Sure my post will get flamed but I speak from my own experiences and preferences. :)

The Boxster is the nicer car, and has the badge which the woman will want. £10k buys a decent 2001 2.7 or 3.2 with low mileage and a decent history.

The auto is entirely subjective, the auto in my GF's seems very good indeed and there is no way i would want a manual over it.

I've only driven a 986 2.5, 2.7 and 3.2S.....and a few 987's too. I have also only driven 2 of the current shape MR2's and I can't recall either being a turbo and it was some years back when I was looking at one for the wife (ironic or what) and I don't think either was a patch on ANY of the Boxsters and certainly for a woman I'd get the Boxster today. The OP did infer he wanted to have some fun at the weekend so I think its merits as a drivers car were both relevant and appropriate. Tiptronic is not my cuppa but for a woman, though not my wife, it might well be the right choice. In my opinion spoil the weekend blat if you want to enjoy the best pedal layout in the game for heel toe fun.

Tis all subjective at the end of the day but I have a wife who was happy peddling my current car at over 150mph at the last Vmax and who has driven my cars over the years so perhaps has a better understanding of what makes a quick car than most women.

My advice ?

Get a decent MR2 turbo for 2.5k and save the rest. You will get the same or better performance although not the build quality.

The downside being that most women wouldn't want to be seen dead in a 15+ year old Japanese chav-mobile with an interior and image to match. Fast yes, do i like MR2Turbo's yes, but they are not at all the same thing :p

I must have been a chav at 33 when I sold it then ..... ;)

Honestly though, great fun. :)

As for the interior though .... it was some of the most awesome dark blue plastic I have ever seen.

Jez understands. I suspect those who do not understand do not have a long-term girlfriends and certainly do not have a wife. You could buy a wife a 911 and if she didn't like it, she'd twist about it non-stop:

Wife: "I liked how the Boxster looked"
You: "This is a better, faster car"
Wife: "The Boxster felt better when we test drove it"
You: "No it didn't"
Wife: "It did, besides, the Boxster has more room for clothes shopping..."
You: ..........

Interesting you brought that up, i have been 911 shopping a lot recently and my gf insists that she wouldnt have one over her boxster.

Her car is newer - NEWER i tell you. Therefore it is better.

I suspect I've been married longer and bought more cars for my wife than all of you put together ;)

Still means sod all, women are strange :D

And regardless of what you do, she is right!

I don't doubt it, and I understand your pain. We men should get long service medals to commemorate our suffering :p

That's certainly food for thought regarding Z4's being so affordable...might be something I look at once I've graduated and sell my MR2.
