T-mobile G1 – The first of the Google Android Phones. A Review

Guys,

Quick question to those with a G1 they are satisfied with:

With the screen out does it have some movement in the hinge - As in hold it infront of you with the keyboard out (As though you are typing a text) and screen if the screen has any movement lifting is up and down. Mine latest replacement appears to have this.

It is also noticeable with the device closed holding it in a standard phone way and pushing the top left... That appears to have flex (Obviously on the same hinge I'd assume).

Still, build quality isn't top notch but if others have minor flex then I think I'll just end up with this phone if I find nothing else. Havn't had the screen protector off to check for pixel issues yet as I'm currently charging it to see if it has the same issue that my second G1 had.

In the PDair case I have for the device there is no flex but that is partly because it squeezes a little band across the top of the phone - Think the same effect as putting folded paper under a wonky table and you have the idea!

Anybody else have this? Do I really have the worst G1 luck ever? I hope this is okay as I wouldn't want to have to ring and ask for a fourth G1 (Third replacement)... I think I'd get laughed at!

G1 = Excellent phone + Shoddy quality control

Hello All,

I am due for an upgrade on the 8th Jan and really can't decide whether to get the G1 or Samsung Omnia.

I had a go on the G1 a couple of days ago and seemed really nice but a few of the features on it make me not so sure. For example I read that you can't connect this phone to a laptop via bluetooth to use as a modem? Also can anyone tell me how the mp3 player is?

I like the idea of the qwerty keyboard, but the overall design of the G1 doesn't look the best, does that put many of you off or do you get use to it?

Finally, is there no flash/light for the camera?

Decisions decisions!

Many thanks.

In response to my previous message - I tried 3 T-Mobile stores in Birmingham and between them was able to look at 4 different G1 units. All exhibited the "hinge" issue that I mentioned above. With this in mind I assume this is normal and hence my G1 is not suffering worse than any other. It is an example of how shoddy the build quality is, though it did put my mind at rest.

Meanwhile, I'm finding zero battery issues. I was very careful to condition the battery when I got it but even using the phone for quite some time with a lot of browsing and maps, etc, I had 50% left at night time. I needed to ensure it would last the next day (As I would not be near a mains supply) so charged it overnight, but none the less I'm sure with this moderate use I could get two days of use. Even more so considering that once the initial use of the device wears off, and I'm back into a more normal Uni routine, the G1's use will be reduced.

FerrariEnzo - Not able to help too much between G1 and Omnia but in short, based on personal opinion only - If you can put up with shoddy build quality and the chance you may have to go through a few replacements to get a good one then I'd pt for the G1. Of course if battery life is an issue for you I'd consider walking away (Whilst I am more than satisfied my old Treo would last much longer... I'm sure even a charge every other day will become a chore after a while!). Tethering is possible, especially through the custom route, but no bluetooth support at present (And certainly not officially). I have not used the MP3 player so cannot comment but only speculate that it would seriously hinder battery life. The qwerty keyboard is nice but I could actually type faster on the Palm Treo thumbpad, due to the G1 requiring a bit more thumb movement and is a bit of a stretch! The keyboard also appears to restrict the build quality of the device. Finally, no flash for the camera! Infact, if a camera is important to you then you may be better off else where. Again for me it is more than sufficient but I know camera quality is important to many and I don't think the G1 would cut it in this department...

Dan.

I'm in the exact same place and after reading about the problems and the battery life (which is important to me) I have opted for the omnia. Read the other thread on here the stuff you can do seems great, and the camera looks good too.

I seem to have a small problem with my phone, it keeps making my notification sound (twice in the last 2 hours) but I have no notifications...

Any ideas?

Do you have any other apps installed that may be making notifications? Eg, power manager when changing profiles? Or even chompSMS? If you have chompSMS you must disable the "Messages" notifications otherwise both chomp and Messages will notify you of any new messages.

Other than that I've no idea... These little niggles sure get annoying! It's sometimes a little hard as I love the phone but sometimes it feels like I'm having to force it a little!

I'm currently trying to find a way to clear the list in "My Downloads" in the Market. It has in there software that has been installed at any time in the past, so when I got the phone and installed lots to find what I liked I'm now left with a huge list. I've hard reset the phone which has obviously removed the apps from the phone but left their entries in "My Downloads" - Surely this proves the list is stored server side? If anybody knows a way to purge this list, I'd appreciate it! :)

i had chomp installed but wasn't keen so took it off a week ago. No other programs that would seem to use notification either :/

Just had a gmail come through, checked it to find i had 9 emails sitting there but had no notifications.

Great review man the phone looks pretty good... my contract has ended and currently its a toss up between this, the iPhone and the N96 :)

With this in mind I assume this is normal and hence my G1 is not suffering worse than any other. It is an example of how shoddy the build quality is, though it did put my mind at rest.
I have only had mine a few days (loving it so far :D) but mine has very little movement in the hinge. One thing I did notice about the ones they had out on display in the T-Mobile store was that they all had slightly dodgy hinges. I think this was down to the fact that all the display G1's were secured down by a metal bracket around the keyboard, with the screen in the open position. Several times while I was in there I saw staff forces the screen closed over the metal bracket thing. When the screen was closed it was obviously forced higher than it should have been, so In my mind this was the cause of the dodgy hinges.

I hate to say it as you have had several replacements already but you may have an ex display model :( Would be best to see if you can find someone else with a G1 in your area and compare.

Thanks for the reply. Since my previous message I have had the chance to see more G1s (Asked in store to see a new one, which was possible) and it seems that they all have some give in them, though it certainly seems some have more than others. Seems yours must be a lucky good one. In the end I'm not too bothered with it as I know it's a new (Not refurb or ex display as I especially asked this when getting my replacement [Unless of course I was lied to]) and has no other issues. In the case I use for it (Which does lift the screen slightly) it is not an issue (Fixes any "wobble" on the hinge)... Infact maybe having that "give" in the hinge is useful in this case where one very firm would have to be forced slightly higher by the cases leather band.

Again, thanks for taking the time to check this out :)

I really want the Android OS but the G1 its a touch too big for me and i need a camera with flash really.
Seeing as it's open source have people got android working on the Omnia, Touch HD or any other smartphone ?

Thanks

Not yet, but I believe its being worked on.

Has anyone not received their free 8gb memory card from T-Mobile? Mine never arrived so I contacted T-Mobile and they said they had run out and wont get any new ones for a while. They have however credited £34.25 to my account so I can buy one from a local T-Mobile store :D

I was thinking of picking one up elsewhere instead as they are a lot cheaper online. However I was wondering if anyone knows if the memory card that comes with the G1 is Class 2/4/6?

I have seen a number of reasonable 8gb cards that come in class 4 and a few 16gb cards that are class 2. Does anyone know if it will make much difference what class I get?

Just ordered one of these as a (free) upgrade to my Touch Diamond.

Wanted a Touch HD, but unfortunately it's not offered on T-Mobile and I didn't want to sign a fresh 18 month contract with Orange or 02.
