Me and a friend went to test drive some BMWs the other day at the High Wycombe dealership. I have to say first off, the service was excellent. They were very accommodating, let us take the cars out on our own, and really didn't apply too much pressure afterwards. I was quite shocked! We spent 6 hours there in total! Anyway, the main cars that i'm focusing on are the Z4 Roadster and Z4 coupe. I tried the 2.0 manual Z4 roadster and the 3.0 automatic Coupe. So a few thoughts:

1) I was pretty set on the Coupe, but once I had the top down on the Roadster, and the sun came out, boy it became pretty addictive.. I never thought i'd consider a soft-top, but now i'm giving it serious consideration.

2) I think I still prefer the manual gearbox. I didn't have too much time to play with the flappy paddle system on the coupe, but I think manual is still for me

3) The standard CD-Radio in the Roadster was, as I feared, pants. It lacked mid range, and generally sounded like somebody had put a wet flannel over the speakers. The sound in the Coupe was better (but still not great), I think the dealer said that any car with the Sat Nav system had slightly uprated speakers anyway (The coupe had the Sat-Nav). But obviously the next step up would be the Hi-Fi speakers and DSP Hi-Fi. Can anybody confirm that all Sat-Nav cars have better sound than the regular ones?

4) The interior of the coupe was fantastic. Felt very roomy, and felt like a place that i'd love to be on a long journey. However I can't help but feel that on a sunny day i'd be cursing myself for not getting the Roadster..

So i'm checking out specs atm, and I think atm, my ideal solution would be to find a nearly-new 3.0 Z4 Roadster Manual with the upgraded Hi-fi, but I think i'll be searching for a while. The amazing thing was that they're chopping out the remaining new Z4s. They had a few 3.0 Z4 roadsters, all brand new, for £25k, including some decent extras like Sat-nav in some of them.. but they were all autos sadly.

Would buying a £25k brand new Z4 3.0 Roadster make sense? I can stretch to £25k, but would rather spend £22k odd for a really nice one. I'm guessing that despite the heavy discount, a brand new Roadster will still lose a good £7k+ in the first year..

I would be very careful, the new z4 is out soon which will impact further on the current model's depreciation.

You can get a decent 3.0 Roadster for under £15k now - also note that if you're getting a Roadster, January is a pretty good time to buy one.

Yeah i'm keeping an eye out for anything 2nd hand. The difficulty is finding a Roadster with the upgraded Hifi :(

The interior of both cars is the same - the same dash, the same seats, etc etc. The only difference is that the Coupe has a fixed roof and the Roadster doesn't. I have to say though, the Roadster at least wouldn't be my first choice for a long journey. I've done a 200 mile trip in the Roadster and it loses it's appeal when it's pouring with rain and you just want to get home. The figidity ride becomes annoying, the windnoise grates, etc.

It's far more at home on your favourite road with the top down and the sun shining, when it comes alive - absolutely great fun.

Yeah, ideally I want to spend under £20k, for a nice low-mileage example. It would have to be brand new, and stacked in terms of spec for me to stretch much more than that.

So is the Coupe that much more suitable for long journeys? Are you saying that when it rains, the Roadster experiences more noise than the Coupe? That would be pretty pants. :(

Of course there is more noise than the Coupe - it's got a fabric roof. Scuzi will disagree with me but I think that the Coupe is a largely pointless car. If you are going to buy a 2 seater Sports car like the Z4, then the roof needs to come off. It's the whole point. If you don't want a roof that folds there are better Coupes out there.s

Is there any reason that you're not waiting for the new Z4 just out of interest? They're out in May aren't they?

Yeah even if I ruptured myself I could probably only afford a poverty spec facelift (2009) Z4. Would much rather save money and go for an 'old' Z4.

They will be out of budget i would imagine.

I believe the base model sDrive23i with no optional extras will start off at £29k. By the time you add the necessary spec, it'll be well over £30k. An sDrive35i with the 3.0 twin turbo will be well over £40k when specced up.

Pity there's no plans for an "M" model or a Coupe :(

Get the convertible! I have one and I love it. No problems on long journeys what so every the soft top is spot on! There is not much road noise or wind noise IMO.

If I had your budget I would say get a used Z4 M, if you don't want a M then get a used 3.0 and save 10k :)
