Stupid Yankee Pronunciation

languages evolve over time and different pronunciations and spellings occur in different parts of the world where a certain language is spoken. Yes, British english is far superior to all imitations, but such is life :p

it's the same with flemish/dutch, german/austrian german, belgian french/french/swiss french, spanish/latin american spanish, etc..

the one that bugs me:

aloominum

(aluminium)

how the bloody hell did they get that pronunciation?

When Sir Humphrey Davy discovered aluminium, in his first paper on the topic he referred to it as "aluminium". In subsequent papers, he referred to it as "aluminum". We maintained the first variation, while the Americans tooko up the second. To be fair they are pretty blameless for that one :)

my mate told me a story of being accosed by a bunch of yanks site seeing in Dorset.

they wanted to visit the chalk carving of guy with famous wang in hillside at cerne abbas... when they asked directions to this they pronounced it 'kerney aybas' lmao
