It's nothing but banter and nicknames bandied about between soldiers. Hell, even the guy referred to as "Our little **** friend" took it as a bit of a laugh and says he's not offended in the slightest.

Because it is usually used to refer to people who are asian but not from pakistan. This offensive for several reasons, one it shows a lack of respect, it'd be like someone from another continant calling you a Gery or a Frog. And secondly, a lot of asians (mainly indians) hate pakistanis.
