Orginally I was a 8800GTX owner and the best upgrade 6 months ago was ATI's offering of the 4870, so owning a X48 Rampage MB I decided to buy 2 of them (the same performanace as a 4870X2 if not a little better).

Here are my results after buying NV lastest and greatest the 295GTX.

3D Mark Vantage:-

4870 512MB X 2 (CF) = 14144 (Stock) 14534 @ 790/1000

295GTX = 20217 (Stock) 21338 @ 620/1200

Clearly the 295GTX is the winner here, what abou Crysis and Farcry though (the ones that matter)?

Crysis Warhead 4XAA @ 1680/1050 Enthuiast 1 Loop:-
Airfield Flythrough:

4870 512MB X 2 (CF) @ 790/1000 = 33.8FPS

295GTX 620/1200 = 43.3FPS

Frost Flythrough:

4870 512MB X 2 (CF) @ 790/1000 = 15.7FPS

295GTX @ 620/1200 = 23.6 FPS

Farcry 4XAA @ 1680/1050 3D10 Ultra High:-
Ranch Long:

4870 512MB X 2 (CF) @ 790/1000 = 63.9FPS

295GTX @ 620/1200 = 91.3FPS

All in all the 295GTX out performs the 4870 512MB X2 (CF) by quite a way with a 2 year old Q6600, the results speak for themselfs. The 4870's Idle around 79C while the 295GTX Idles at 44c.

I'd say the performance of a 4870x2 would be a good cut better than 2x CF 4870 512mb cards.

If nothing, owing to the extra full 1gb of Ram on the 4870x2 compared to the 2x 4870's

Excellent results non the less, Thanks !

I would agree but from the benchmarks Ive seen at 1680/1050 their about the same.

can you try some other games? both those games seem to be nvidia optimised so the results have to be taken with a pinch of salt :)

Valve games are generally ati optimised, we'd expect the cf setup to win out there

^^Love the sig :-D

+1, try some ATI friendly games and you'll see some real performance, also using high resolutions show much better performance rise on the 4870x2.

tbh its now facing cards that are 5-6 months old now, so you would expect it to win.

i can see the 295gtx being another 9800gx2, its not that they are bad cards but being released at a time between releases. Once the new batch of ati vs nvidia cards are out it will vanish aswell. (as did the gx2 when the 260/280gtx and 4850/4870 arrived)

cards like these are not worth the money imo, but that depends on what the next batch of cards will be like.

the next batch of cards will be awesome, we will be seeing some real nice 40/45nm cards that are sure to blow these current cards away. Ill bet ATI get there first and when they do ill buy that card.

today for tomorrow for me....................does anybody here Remember the name "little Dragon" if memory servers me right this will be ATI's answer to the green team.

I agree a single x2 should out perform a pair of CF 512s - tehre are some more comparisons here - thanks for taking the time to run the tests though :)

Will be interesting to re run them when the CAT 9.1s are released :)

Dont tell me your going to try and tell me its a waste of money?? If they benched the same results then you would be right, they dont theres nearly a 40% increase!

Of course theres an increase, its a more powerful card. Surely the point is that at that res you arent getting anything that a lesser card could do.

Not knocking you for buying it by the way I just dont follow your comment.

There's nothing wrong with a powerful card at 1680x1050

You see big improvements on demanding games, yes on some games there is almost equal performance between the cards on 1680x1050 and 1920x1200, but there are an awful lot of newer games that show better frames at lower res, than they do on higher and faster frames at lower res when you upgrade to more powerful card

Where games are concerned you can never have to much firepower, until you get a card that can do 1680x1050 any game all maxed out, with a minimum FPS of 60 at the games most demanding points, thats when you've reached optimum power and anymore is pointless
