Upgrade From a Ati 2900xt To A GTX 295

If you sit as close to it as a normal PC monitor, the difference will be pretty darn big. If you were to just use it as a TV from a fair distance away, it might not matter so much. But hey, it will be hell of a lot easier to run that resolution than 1080p, so you don't need to spend as much on your GPU.

I am now more thinking of getting a nvidia 260 but gonna give it some thought and also which version brand so to speak, does anyone no if oc value cards are any good i presume there aint much in them but for designs really

OcUK 260 will be like all the rest, reference design, will just have differing warranty length to the others, and differing software, cables, adapters etc... with it, deffo worth going for as its a cracking price. :)

Thought so as had one before back in the day with a x850, so just recapping now i got a AMD 6000 we 4gb ram 700 ocz psu and upgradeing from a ati 2900xt presumeing i go ahead with it

i disagree the gtx295 is not pointless, but it would be uber overkill on OP set up. a 1gb 4870 or gtx/260/280 will be fine and will be good enough if u upgrade cpu/mobo later down the line

The 295 as a graphics card is pointless, though you'd obviously disagree since you've bought one.

£100+ over the competition for what gain? To add even more hurt, the 4870X2 has just had its RRP slashed, so it'll make the 295 even more pointless.

You're throwing money away getting one because they're not supposed to last long. They'll be end-of-line in 2 months and offer nothing over a 4870X2.

+1

The 295 is going to be top dog for another couple of months, and then the new generation of cards will launch. Just like the 9800GX2, I predict a short life span.

at 1366x768, I doubt you even need a 260, a 4850 at ariund £115 would be enough. I assume your RAM is DDR2? If you were willing to spend £400+ on a GTX295, then i really recommend you upgrade your CPU. An E8400 plus mobo would only set you back around £225 and that with a 4850 would outperform your AMD6000 plus a 260 in many games.

My current system is a lot faster in many games than my old 3870X2 with a an Opteron at 3.0ghz and the 3870X2 is technically a 'faster' card than a 4850.

of course you coudl still afford a GTX260 and a new cpu and mobo for the cost of the 295.

a GTX260 or higher is overkill for your system and res. 1360x768(not 1366) is such a low resolution that you could get an 8800GTS G92 for well under £100 and it will still play anything you throw at it for the next year easily...

I would worry about upgrading the rest of your system first, just settle for a cheap graphics card now, untill you upgrade your cpu/mobo/ram

u should stick with single card suggestion 280gtx would me more thAn enough

Even a GTX280 is overkill for what he has. Value for money on them is crap now they've gone back up, also they're end-of-line now too.

4870 1GB and upgrade the rest of his stuff, new CPU and motherboard will be his best option, and it'll give him good scope for getting a new monitor with a higher res in the future.

HD4850 and save the rest of the money for a future system.

At that resolution a GTX260 and HD4870 whilst offering better outright performance (in terms of FPS) won't actually offer anything more in terms of playability (the HD4850 will already offer more than playable framerates).
