Hi Guys,

just recieved the Antec 1200 at the weekend, very impressive case.

Although it comes with 6 fans, 3x120mm intake fans on the front and 2x120mm exhaust fans at the back, plus one massive 200mm exhaust on the very top of the case.

it comes another place to position a fan on the clear side panel, it would blow or extract air right where my GTX 280 is... i suspect Antec have designed this to be an intake fan as it comes fitted with a fan filter (without a fan).

im just wondering if anyone can advise me if i should add another fan here, i cant decide if it would be of any benefit or not...

because basically my air flow is like this:

*************^Exhaust 3 (blowing air upwards)
************_ ^______________
***********|-------------------|
exhaust 1 <--|-------------------| <-- intake 1
***********|-------------------|
exhaust 2 <--|-------------------| <--intake 2
**********|---/ ? /------------|
***********|-------------------| <--intake 3
***********|-------------------|

i hope that makes sense, the / ? /, is where the fan slot is positioned, ignore the asteriks, they are their because it wont let me type multiple spaces.

I like the fact that the air intakes and exhausts are aligned perfectly with each other, and intake 1 and exhaust 1 are also aligned perfectly with my Akasa Nero CPU Heatsink & Fan, so basicaly air is getting blasted super quick through my case and extracted without much disruption.

Im just wondering if adding an extra fan where the / ? / is, might disrupt the flow and actually be detrimental?

anyone have any advice?

Best wait until your system has been running and can study the temperatures under load conditions. Might not be any problems at all. The heat coming off a GTX 280 is incredible, mine runs CUDA 24/7 (seti@home) so I'm careful to keep temps low as I can. An issue you want to watch for is temperature of the Northbridge, which tends to sit between CPU and your (hot) GTX 280. Now this would normally have air blown onto it from the stock CPU fan, but with a horizontal Akasa Nero blowing straight out the back it gets no ventilation at all - and can get too hot. To get around that you can either use spot fans, or like I did a 120mm fan in the side of the case. So the side fan for your case might have a use.

didnt think of that!, ive been monitoring my temps and my mobo and CPU both run at about 40 degrees idle, when they work hard they hardly even touch 50! (although i havent touched the overclock settings yet, i just got the i7 940 clocked by OCuk to 3.66...)

need to find a suitable program to give me temp readings for my GPU, i know its possible as i have one program called 'PC Wizard' although it isnt a very stable program.... would loive it if i could configure the Asus palm device to show me the temp readings of all my compononents with temp sensors....

Shady, what fan did you fit? I havent done so yet, my temps are fine, but was thinking I might just to add a bit extra cooling round gfx card. Anyway as I say which fan did you fit? And are you using a controller or just letting it spin au naturale as it were?

u wanna have it blowing cold air into the case. extra cooling for gpu and mobo.
thats what mines doing anyway :)

what fan did you go for?

ever since i got the antec 1200 ive been thinking about replacing all the fans with the Acoustifans super quiet ones, but then again they dont glow a super cool blue colour as the stock Antec fans do...hehe.... its a hard decision, a very good looking blue glowing rig that sounds like a boeing 747 or a dark black super rig that hardly makes a noise....

For the side panel i had been thinking of the Akasa illuminated, one of the reviewers say the colour is very similar to the ones in his Antec 900 which i believe has the same colour fans as the 1200...

edit: seems you asked before me rifles, yeah, im interested to know if he used a controller too...

just looking at my case and where my gtx295 is the fan is blowing onto the metal fins down the side of the card. would that be where the air from the gpu cooler gets pushed through? my temps seem fine so it cant be an issue

Yeah just been looking on antecs site, from what I can work out the noise level of the 120mm case fans is round 28dB (average - so dont know if that means on medium setting or what), link here, doesnt specify about the big boy though, obviously so long as any fan you fit isnt much over this it shouldnt be an issue, tbh my gfx cards make most noise anyway

your gpu's are louder than the 1200?? wow... i cant even heard the GTX 280 when i turn all the fans to low.

well CCC defaults the speeds to bout 24% which is about level with med case fan settings, I crank em up to 35% for desktop use which is bout same as high fan setting, but when gaming I set em to 50% to make sure they stay nice n cool, then theyre louder than the case :( keep toying with idea of WC them just to reduce noise, but thing is my CPU cooling is great but I suppose if I did go for it Id do whole systme, but that'd be like £200 and I'd feel Im not getting the best out of the lovely 1200 case, though obviously if I do go for it I'll turn all fans down to low

I use RivaTuner to adjust GPU fan, have it set at constant 75% duty cycle as the GPU is working hard most of the time. Temp is around 75deg max and can't hear the fan (big case on floor under desk). I bought a couple of 120mm Noctua silent case fans but they don't seem to move much air, they're quiet because they only turn at ~800rpm.
