Asda just rang

Firstly, check its not a scam!

PK!
Yep, ask them to provide proof it's not a scam, and then ask where they got your phone number from. Pretty sure the banks aren’t supposed to give these out for any reason, or isthis possibly the best argument yet for not having a "loyalty card".

I really can't see how this can be considered theft if you don't pay. Just deny you are who you are, and say you don't shop at asda because the products are rubbish.

How did they have your wife's number? Are you sure it's not secret affair code? ;) :(

Exactly, unless they got it from a store card. Do asda even have a points card?

I wouldn't do anything over the phone and I would check my rights. I wouldn't pay anything. It's inconvenient when places take ages to take money out your account. IIRC they have a certain time limit to take the money.

It's got to be a scam. Once you swipe your card and it is verified by the bank (they return an authorisation code) then the funds will be taken out of the bank.

Also why the hell would Asda ring chasing £76?

Odd.

I would pay, if I was sure that their story was correct. As it is I can't remember how much I spent at Sainsbury's yesterday so would need them to provide me with a receipt, and I'd cross check that with my bank to make sure the money hadn't already gone out. I wouldn't do the transaction over the phone either.

Hehe yes my wife says that we should pay them and I guess its the right thing to do but now you got me thinking about the phone number thing, obviously I wouldnt pay them over the phone just like that. Best suggestion so far is like the other fella said - to ring them and tell them to contact me at the end of the month whe n I have my statement through, although I do know they havent taken payment as I checked online earlier today :)

Maybe the details where taken but not the money, so they are ringing up to authorize the money being taken instead of just taking it out, some companies would have just forced the transaction through, I know Microsoft force transactions for xbox live subscriptions even with cards that have expired. All they would need is the name and the bank.

Sounds like it was internet shopping, whereby you give contact details in case there is a delay or the driver gets lost.
Pay it.

How they got your wife's number is the question I'd be asking.

I'd wait for them to call you back tbh. Then when they do ask them how the hell they got your number. Go from there :D

The more I think about this the more I feel it must be a scam. If you understand how the debit/credit car system works there's no way they wouldn't have the money if it’s legitimate.

They shouldn't hand over the goods unless the card has been authorised. If the card has been authorised then they should just be able to take the money from your account no questions asked. The only explanation is they've lost you card details, which I'm afraid is there problem. To get the money you’d have to re-authorise the payment which as far as I can tell you’re under no obligation to do a second time.
