I just wondered if there would be a price drop on the 4870 1GB anytime soon? I've got a budget of £500 - £550 to build a new box and was hoping to pay around the £160ish mark, using the £50 saved to buy a new HDD. I must admit I did look at the GTX 280 several times last week, but that would be almost half my budget gone, so I'm definitely going to tough it out until the price drops.

Supposedly this week, Europe already has some Ati gfx cards cheaper, the UK market is slow to respond as ever.

This week would be great,I'm desperate for a new box, I'm running an old 6800GT and an Athlon 3200+ I've been waiting to upgrade the PC for a while now and just can't wait any longer.

How long are you willing to wait?

I heard of some ATi 4900 cards showing up around March using the new 40nm architecture, meaning it could be cheaper and it could clock better so if you want to wait for a bit, save a couple more £ then buy yourself a card to last.

Though I'm sure that for the first couple of weeks the usual new-release premium will be attatched, offsetting the savings in the manufacturing process! Which is a shame as I'm holding out for this range and don't want to wait any longer than I have to.

Well I can certainly wait until March, that's not too far away. I want something that's going to last me about three years, but on the budget I have I don't really want to pay more than about £160 for a card, it must be 1GB as my native resoultion is 1680 x 1050.

Yeah there's little need for 1GB of memory at that resolution as of now, but I suppose if he wants to make it last 3 years then that extra 512MB will carry him further, plus allow for the possibility of a bigger screen down the line.

Oh I didn't realise, I read that there was some slowdown on the more graphically intensive games at the resoultion, or perhaps that was 1920 x 1080. I think I'd rather go for the 1GB version though; for the sake of a few extra £££'s I'd rather be safe with games likely to become even more graphics intensive in the future.

If you are keeping the card for three years then definitely go with the 1GB version. I think games have problems with 1080p (1920x1080) because it is not a fully supported mode as one screen is 16:9 and one is 16:10. If you do go to upgrade your monitor make sure its 1920x1200 as that's the most compatible/highest resolution supported by games unless you get 30"+

Thanks all for the advice, I will defintely be going for the 1GB version. It may be less than three years replacing the card as when I upgrade to PCI-e I can periodically upgrade components bit by bit (like I used to do) rather than having to shell out for a complete new box. That is why I have put the upgrade off for so long, and I just hope there are no plans afoot to change from PCI-e for a while. I'm quite happy with my 22"" monitor atm, I probably won't upgrade it for a long while yet.

I'm itching to play those games I've been wanting to try for a while i.e Far Cry 2, GTA IV, Crysis, Assasins Creed, Left for Dead etc etc. I've been playing Warcraft for a long time and the PC has just about been ok, but with the new expansion it's really struggling now.

Personally I've not yet run into any problems running games at 1080, in fact I'm one of those weird few who prefer it over 1200 due to the aspect ratio.
