Unpaid meetings at work? legal?

Face facts mate she's banging your best friend behind your back and using the school as a cover. ;)

Oh I wouldnt let her kick up a fuss alone! I dont know of anyone there who is even a little bit happy about them being unpaid!

Cheers though guys! Unfortunately other work is nigh on impossible to find at the moment! As im sure many out there are finding!

I've been in a similar situation before, when my manager at a shop I worked at tried to make the staff stay after the paid hours regularly to "walk the store". One time I told her I'm going and she went nuts, but I stood my ground and just turned my back on her and walked out of the door. Since then she seemed to view me differently at work and perhaps respected me a little more.

I'd advise telling your girlfriend to make an excuse up for each meeting then just not showing whatever he says to the excuse. After she's not shown up for the first few it'll show him that she's not to be messed with.

It's not cool but with so many people losing their jobs - id say suck it up. Those of us on salary typically work many hours for nothing...

That sort of attitude is what leads to this sort of crap in the first place, not having a a go, just wishing it were different :(

if it's in the contract and it's not completely ridiculous then it's legal.

at my last job you had to be there 15 minutes early every day and often wouldn't leave until 30 minutes + after close, and then there was an hours 'training' a week, all unpaid, all were agreed to in the contract. so a 40 hour week became a 44.75 hour week (which over 4 weeks added up to 19 hours (or £108, i didn't stay there very long!) (all on minimum wage as well :())

I dont wish to say the name of the nursery as this info is online and accessible to anyone to read.

She (as is everyone there) is always unhappy about them but tonight especially she is fuming!

If there is no mention of these meetings in her contract then can the staff refuse to attend.

I will get her conract out to have a look and see whats in there, the guy running this nursery really doesnt know how to run a happy workplace at all. This is just 1 of quite a few problems when it comes to staff treatment etc. I did tell my girlfriend to make a diary of dates and times of events she thinks need addressing. The guy isnt happy until he makes someone cry if they are in trouble for the most trivial of things.

glad my kid is not going there either who wants stressed out workers looking after your priceless kiddies :(

If the boss isn't there, why the hell aren't they all down the pub.

No, wait, that's it, she never works late, she's lying to you to go to the pub.

Sounds similar to when my wife worked at a nursery. The place was run by a tyrant where the bottom line was the only thing that mattered. Every corner that could be cut, was.
She left very quickly. It makes me doubly sure to check out nurseries in detail before considering one.

I'm not a laywer but I would imagine that isn't legal as it would break the National Minimum Wage Act 1998, as the hours worked would be paid below the minimum wage when your pay is averaged out. It wouldn't matter what the contract says if the term is illegal.
