Im having heating issues with my Sapphire Radeon 4870X2 even with 60% fan which is as noisy as hell. Im also experiencing artifacts in Battlefield 2142 which isnt the most demanding game!

30% Fan
Idle: 81c
Load 99+c Turbo Fan Kicks In for 8 Seconds repeats after 30 secs more play

40% Fan
Idle: 75c
Load 96c Turbo Fan Kicks In for 6 Seconds repeats after 40 secs more play

50% Fan
Idle: 69c
Load 89c Turbo Fan Kicks In for 6 Seconds repeats after 80 secs more play

60% Fan
Idle: 60c
Load 83c Turbo Fan Kicks In for 6 Seconds repeats after 120 secs more play

70% Fan
Idle: 52c
Load 79c

100% Fan
Idle: 41c
Load 67c

The card has always run a tad warm but i used to be able to game at 45-50% fan now i can only game at 60 - 70% fan.
The card had a clean with compressed air about 8 weeks ago although there is a very light dusting on the CPU cooler.
Card is running at stock, CPU is OC and idles at 47c and load = 58-60c

The photo below is a month old and since then the wires have been put through the back so none are obstructing airflow.

As you can see there is a huge fan on the side directly aiming at the Graphics card.

Any suggestions? many thanks.

Something definatly wrong with your X2

mine idles for instance at 43c @ 42% fanspeed. and thats with the card overclocked @ 800/960

I made my own bios though with custom power and fan profiles and overclock :D
so all i do is install drivers i dont need to use any overclocking programs or the like.

you might wanna take the heatsink off and reapply some artic silver 5 just a thought.

Could you try some thing and see if it has any results........you said that you overclocked your CPU did you increase your memory FSB? if you did try dropping it and see what happens.
I had artifacts, screen going blank etc then i dropped my memory and and all is fine.

One last question buddy............are you a time lord because your pictures says it ws taken on 2010!

Even though i recently cleaned the card i had another look at the heatsink and it has a nice blanket of dust blocking the airflow.

strange how it has built up that dust in less than a 8 weeks. ive cleaned it out and its sitting at 38c idle and 60c load.

happy days for another month anyway.

It might be an idea to create a dust filter for the huge fan on the side of the case.

It will pull in quite a bit of dust, hence the build up on your GFX.

Has that helped?

My computer hung on Friday whilst played TF2 - a lot of textures disappeared and when it hung i could see a lot of white spots, with fan set to default which think is 27% mine idles at around 70c, if i set it to 40% its 50c and 50% its at 48c

In game it can easily exceed 80c ... which seems a tad high :(

4870 Sapphires have a issue with the wrong bios being supplied on them or something like that. I had to flash mine as I kept getting odd squares on my games and general freezing of the PC. You should check it out.

how did you flash the bios? i heard it was really difficult and risky to do by OCUK i also have boot issues with this card 6/10 boots fail with my post LCD display saying VGA Bios

Any help/info on flashing VGA Bios would be great.

That issue i believe was only for the sapphire 4870 and not the x2-also had to be a certain sku for it to apply as well.

I've just had a little look on the Sapphire forums and I can't see anything for the 4870x2.

Edit: yeah it looks like the bios flash is for a different card.

What PSU are people using, what are the 12v rail ratings?

I'm using a Silverstone 750w, supposedly with 60amp on the 12v rail.

My room temp is at 30c, my 4870x2 is at 45c with 100% fan atm, had it on 100% for the last 20 minutes or so.

100% fan sounds like a hair dryer :D

Here's mine atm...

Mine seems to be running a little cooler, my room temperature atm is 27C.

Forgive my ignorance but what's the VDDC Current reading mean, it seems a bit lower than yours to me but I don't know much about this sort of thing tbh.

Mine is the Sapphire version.

What do other people get from gpu-z?

The Fan Speed percentages in GPU-Z are incorrect, it always shows 40% whatever percentage you have it set for.

The fan speeds for HEADRAT looks like 28% and shoot1st 27%

The is my GPU-Z for 27% (Windows 7) Room temp ... dunno, but its quite cold.
I have an old Antec Sonata case - the side door is off

I have a Corsair 750W TX Series PSU

I'm beginning to wonder whether it is due to my motherboard or cpu over heating because i just removed a flash drive from the back of my pc and nearly burnt my finger on the metal bit
