As title iv been looking around at a 2 seater sporty car, not buying right now, couple months maybe, just checking the market.

Basically I want a 2 seater, maybe rear wheel drive car for fun and everyday use, I have a ~10 mile journey to work through snowdonia everyday and the awesome mountainey roads are just asking for a car like that, also im at a place in my life now where iv just started to earn good money and can put aside say £4000 to (at a push) £6000 or so, cars iv got eye on are:

BMW Z3

or in a perfect world : Vauxhaul VX220

Could you list any other similar sort of car ? No silly comments please, im after something like that :D

Not overly ridiculous though, they fuel figures on those cars arnt insane, although I know there not amazing either, :) also randomly, iv seen some LPG converted Z3's, good for the trip to work, and just switch to petrol for the weekends ;) any suggestions ?

At the bottom of your budget, you could get a very nice Mk2 MR2 Turbo :)

Oodles of fun... I can't help but think a £6k VX220 would be a bit of a dog (unless it was an N/A).

Good choice. I'd love one too. Hopefully in a few years!

But the MX5 is an obvious one to throw out there. You should get a decent one for that sort of money. And the MR2 might be worth a shout.

You aren't driving huge distances to and from work, so I'd say forget about LPG. You won't really notice the cost saving (especially as I'd imagine you'd pay extra when buying the car), and then you can have more fun, more of the time!

[EDIT: clearly I'm a bit slow. But it did justify my comment that the MX5 is an obvious choice!]

Could go mad and get a mk1 mr2 and get paul woods to bung a 3l V6 in there, or the 2l turbo from the mk2, both doable for £4k or less,

Or get an mx-5 and go the turbo/supercharged route,

Or get a S1 elise (I'd be very very tempted by this)

Those are the 3 that I'd be considering :)

Hmmm I like the answers :D the more exotic elise cars etc are a little out price range, however, Im half thinking now, a 'cheap' MX5 for a few months of fun and thrills while I save up more money for a VX220/elise ?

You could get an Elise S1 for this money but unless you waited a while for a bargain to pop up (they do now and then) then you won't get much for £6k.

I suspect you'd get more for your money in an MX5 or VX220.

mx5 / s1 elise

Sadly an S1 Elise or VX220 at this price will likely be an extremely tatty example, or have a Cat D/C history. This is pretty much bottom of the budget for an S2000 as well.

The sensible money would probably go on an MX5, but just to be different I'm going to mention a Lotus Elan. It's wrong wheel drive, but it's a nice handling car and no slouch.
