Safety feature where someone gets alerted if you haven't moved in a while?

Another safety feature could be automatically taking photos and uploading them somwhere in case you're involved in an accident. Automatic geotagging of these photos will allow others to view your route for interest.

I can get away with a lot regarding patents and copyright laws when doing uni projects as long as I never retail/distribute it :)

I assume this is for an FYP Kree? I'm also doing my FYP, just finished my Research section, now onto the Analysis of the research and specifying the requirements of the system :)

Would it not be best for you to do somesort of questionnaire Kree? I was told to reference absolutely everything. How would you reference our opinions? :p

... in the future I would not be surprised to see phones being used as personal CCTV cameras, i.e. an attack deterrent, because you could be beaming back pictures of what you are experiencing so your potential attacker would be caught on camera. Geotagging this info would have course help any subsequent investigation.

I have sorted my work load so I did 60 credits in the first semester and 20 credits in this semester which means I can dedicate almost all of my time to this project. It also explains why I am only at the research section at the moment :p

This is basic preliminary research, I will bullet point the ideas mentioned in these threads and then sort them to develop a questionnaire along with my own suggestions.

Did you mean to post a link back to this forum? If you did, I'd very much doubt his lecturers would accept it :p

Yes ... I was just saying it's easy to reference our opinions, it's this thread!

Having said that, I guess your lecturers just want you to get into good habits and the referencing they want you to do is back to the existing scientific literature ...

Welshy, one of the key components behind my project is user driven features, and referencing will not be an issue. I have discussed it in depth with my tutors and supervisors and we should be fine with this type of initial "group brainstorming".

I'm currently doing some vague background research on a university project, I'm looking for general opinions on features you'd like to see in a GPS based tracking system to aid running, cycling etc. (any track/circuit based event) with the program designed to be run on generic phones with GPS receivers.

I guess if you combine this with map data, you can also get the altitude you are running at, plus data related to climb and descend on your route.

Oh nice, so you did three quaters of your final year in the first semester? Not sure if we'd even be allowed to do that here, never thought of that before.

Anyway, to end my derailing of the thread... Maybe you could make somesort of interface with a heart-rate monitor/speedometer that could beam the information back to your computer? Then have a fancy graph waiting for you when you got back, with heart-rate/speed compared to distance etc.

... and you should be able to get approx. distance run given to you by the phone GPS as you go. This could also be used as an "in run coach" for training, telling you when you should speed up in the marathon etc.

We're not allowed, but I got away with it as I could justify doing it that way.

Combining with map data is an issue as each GPS enabled system accesses the internet in a different way and there can be bandwidth costs involved. Also these devices have a very small amount of memory for storing maps on but it a feature I'd really like to include and will be researching it heavily in the next week.
