Our world may be a giant hologram

Can anyone summarize what they mean by hologram? As obviously they don't mean it in the conventional sense.

Well a conventional hologram is a 2D encoding of the interference patterns present in the light composing the given image, which in the presence of illumination then reproduces such interference patterns, giving the appearance of a 3D image.

So I presume what they mean is that in some sense the universe we see is simply a projection of information encoded on some universal surface.

How many bizarre and contradictory ideas can you believe at once, Teki? I'm curious to know.

I'm even more curious to hear your rationale for swallowing every new "revelation" or "conspiracy" that you've read about. They can't all be true.

Well i never said i believed it did i, and since when is New Scientist conspiracy?

if the world is a hologram...does that mean when we eat that we are not really eating ?
why are we alive ?

It just means that everything you see and do is a 3d projection of something that's happening somewhere in the universe in 2d. That said if this holographic theory is to be believed then the universe as we see it is also a projection.

It's an interesting one, not sure if there are really any implications if it's true though.

So when we move something we are moving the information, when we build something we are making new code no? Sort of like a running computer program?

As that must be why everyone see's the same thing, because all that is here is a flat surface with information on it basically and we decode it to make it look like stuff, sort of like computer games right?

So basically, we're living a computer game :p, a BIG computer game!!! :D.

There's a video about this on Youtube - search Holographic Universe its a 2 part.

The Holographic Universe by Michael Talbot is a very interesting read, I read it a few years ago and I remember it being a bit 'out there' but still a different take on things. Very thought provoking.

Can't really remember a great deal of it now though but If anyone was interested in the theory then you should check it out.

Its a scientific theory not a conspiracy theory.

So in this holographic theory, who or what is constantly changing the surface that the information is encoded on?

I don't know if this has been suggested yet but could this be how Quantum entanglement happens? If we create two electrons where actually rewriting the program and that's why they can change in our perspective at the opposite sides of the Universe, when in fact there just changing in the program. Now that's weird. :D

Would help if people saved talking about the universe as a computer program for a thread that was actually about it :)

Physical processes happening on that surface, which presumably would mean that the processes we observe are nothing more than a projection of these other processes.

Crikey when you think of it like that it's like saying we're all processes.

End process tree...
