I've got itchy feet as I've not upgraded my rig in a long long time!

Is the outlay for i7 worth it? I imagine I'd be able to get quite a lot of money for my CPU etc so I wouldn't be spending all that much.

What is going to be the main use for your new i7 system?

Looking at your sig you have a fine system.
In order to go i7 you would need:
a new CPU
a new Motherboard
a new set of DDR3 RAM

which will cost you, actually, a quite a few bit.

i7 is not worth "itchy" upgrade, IMO. If your system does fine at what it does now, I really don't see a reason to upgrade. That is, of course, assuming that you have extra cash burning a hole in your pocket.

I'd like to update too. Just changed my 8800GTX for a 280GTX (£100 to upgrade essentially) with the price drops. But I am going to hold out for the 32nm shrink, next gen graphics and Windows 7 all in one go. At least prices of i7 and the required paraphernalia should have come down by then. Started saving ...

To be honest, my system does everything fine. But I used to think that with my old E4300 system and when I upgraded I was amazed at the difference.

actually you've got a smilar spec pc to what I've got, well had. I sold of my Maximus formula board got £110 for it and Q6600 cpu for which i got £130 for (actually made a profit on my Q6600 since i only paid £110 brand new for it when the price was low in march 08) Anyway I've managed to buy myself a Asus PT6 Deluxe OC Palm edition board for £200 and a i7 920 for £205 both brand new (got a friend in the states to post it over) So altogether its cost me £160 to upgrade which isn't that bad really. I'd rather do it now while I knew my board and cpu were worth something, rather than waiting 2-3 years and then having to £300+ to upgrade.

Its the motherboard thats the really big cost. If we could get the boards for the same price as in the states which was £170 for the PT6 palm edition it would makes things soo much easier.

I jumped from an E6600 @ 3ghz to gain more cores for video processing, but from a Q6600 - especially if you have a nice clock already - not sure I would!

The answer to that question is entirely subjective MilanoChris me old Crucial Special 10th Mukka! ;)

What you have to personally do is define worth! :p

  • Pros:
    • Waggle your Intel® Core™ i7 ePeen all over the forums!
    • Spending a few weeks playing with cutting edge hardware
    • Owning a multi-threaded mOnster encoder/renderer
    • Unlocking extra performance from your Tri-SLI/Crossfire setup at beyond HD

  • Cons:
    • Spending money
    • Will you benefit or notice the upgrade in the Real-World
    • A vast amount of software still not use multicore to its potential
    • Possible major Intel® Core™ i7 coming up a few months after release
I've got itchy feet
Ahh not much can be done about that I'm afraid! although I have found sometimes the god of itchyfeet can be appeased by a few small and easy purchases like an uBer mouse mat, webcame, speakers, a good game etc etc

I'd also be tempted to swap out your old 65nm Kentsfield Quad for a newer 45nm Wolfdale and perhaps try on a 4GHz Dual-Core for size!

Unless you use a ton of Multi-threaded apps I'm sure you will find a faster dual-core nice and comfy! :o

Other than that the 8800GTX although a legend in its time is deffo getting past its sell by date, out of the kit you mentioned and apart from the CPU that 90nm power sucking fiend needs to get sold mucho rapido!

To sum up, swap out your Q6600 for an E5200/E8400 and swap out your 8800GTX for something more shiney! :p

That's my opinion, do what you feel is best and basically have fun! :)

I bet postage wasn't cheap though.

Cheers for the thoughts, interesting.

I could near enough swap my CPU... food for thought.

I dunno what CPU you think you have but your far from swapping it.

I've just made the jump to the spec in my sig and I have seen a fair bit of performance increase, but then my previous rig had a P4 northy @ 2.8 and an x1950 pro :D

I would say your wasting your quad and you would see benefits of a dual @4.5Ghz in gaming. I can be playing cod4 with a virus scan running and DLing a torrent and not feel any slow down.
